What I like most about the comments is that the good ones are usually far more interesting than the article being commented on. I hate to admit it but I usually skim the summary and dig straight into the comments section of any particular article. I almost never RTFA.

Nah. They'll charge whatever we're willing to pay. Sure they can claim development costs and overhead but in the end, business is business. Studies have shown (do a google search) that the younger generation plays games and surfs the web more than they watch TV. It's only natural for advertisers to want their ad seen by as many eyeballs as possible. I for one can't wait until the zombie army I'm fighting gets new uniforms...in the form of Snuggies.

I have to agree with the parent about the marketing aspect and add that many people are moving from physical media to digital content. Music, movies, etc. The wheels of progress move slowly but eventually you'll be downloading new movies instead of buying disks. We've gotten to the point where even email providers are persuading people not to delete their correspondence anymore. The whole process is cyclic. Hard drive manufacturers improve hard disk capacities and in turn, new technology can be implemented. For example, I work in the CCTV field. Larger hard drives means I can have more recorded content, higher framerates and/or higher quality recorded content. There are also great new technologies that rely on having a large amount of space available.
