Journal TTK Ciar's Journal: Short update: UnixAdminBot, and Hey a BBS 1

It turns out that someone else's software was already named ActiveAssist, so I've changed the name of the project to UnixAdminBot (which is more descriptive of its purpose anyway). I'm really eager to get it back in working condition, as I have myriad immediate uses for it. I spent a good chunk of time working on it today.

Rumors have surfaced that Yahoo is switching their Groups bulletin boards to for-pay only, threatening one of the groups in which I am (barely) active. As a fallback, I threw a Psunami BBS up on my web site, here. It's written in perl, so I was able to fix a few bugs I found, and enhanced a few features (for instance, it now recognizes most urls in posted messages and converts them to links without needing the user to add a notation). It has no file uploads section, but until I get around to hacking one up I can give select users an account on the underlying Unix system so that they can ftp files up to their home directories.

Oops! I just made another project. :-(

Making Psunami instances is really easy. I might switch to a BBS-based blog instead of this slashdot crap, which is increasingly annoying me. (I just noticed that one can't leave comments on older journal entries, grrrr. This compounds my annoyance at being disallowed proper html for formatting my entries, the expiration of oldest entries, and the inability to compose entries easily from within lynx, all shortcomings which switching to Psunami would completely eliminate.)

  • Its not PHP! Score. I left you a message on the board, though I doubt if i will use it more than that. Just as I prefer socializing only with maybe one or two people at most in real life, same thing online. Boards and newsgroups scare me like crowds do. Anyhow, have fun!
