Comment Re:poll idea: how many aim users on your roatser (Score 1) 140

I have been using Jabber for the past year or so, and Have 74 total users on my roster (cut back from about 150).. of those users, 1 is an AIM user, and 2 are ICQ users.. the rest are Jabber users..

Personally, I don't have a problem with what AOL is doing.. they have a right to their users "privacy", bla bla bla.. but I feel they are only hurting themselves.. eventually, enough people will be on MSN, Yahoo, or Jabber, and AOL's die hard AIM users will want to talk to these people.. which means they will either have to suffer or switch...

In my mind, Jabber is not competing with AOL at all.. Jabber provides much more than simply IM services (chat/groupchat/file xfer/etc), but it can be used as a middleware, such as CORBA or COM... in short, Jabber is a protocol which allows any two entities to exchange XML documents in real time, with presence detection... and the Jabber Server, when stripped of the jabber protocol extensions, is nothing more than a glorified XML router... Plenty of applications can be built upon the Jabber protocol.. can you say the same for AIM?
