36-Hour Lemmings Port Gets Sony Cease and Desist 268

Zerocool3001 writes "The recently featured 36-hour port of the original Palm version of Lemmings to the iPhone and Palm Pre has received a cease and desist letter from Sony. Only one day after submitting the app for approval on the two app stores, the developer has put up a post stating that he 'did this as a tribute to the game — we can only hope that Sony actually does a conversion for platforms like iPhone and Palm Pre in the near future.' The text of the cease and desist letter is available from the developer's website."

A Finnish court ruling probably doesn't apply in the US.

SCOTUS has in the recent past cited decisions from international courts in their own decisions and dissents (with some controversy). A quick google search turned up this one - http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=700176. But, as a practical matter, Finnish court rulings don't have much weight in the US.

Journal Journal: The Value of Nature

So, to continue with the Tree riff, I was reading The Economist this week and there was an interesting article about the value of urban trees. We so often take trees, and most of nature, for granted. We don't often think of their economic value. So, in this article, they calulcated that the value of an urban tree can be as high as $100,000, even more! Because the tree is doing valuable things like cleaning air and water, providing habitat and lots of other things. To put that in perspective, the

Submission + - World's large PC makers gear up for China fight (yahoo.com)

athloi writes: "Lenovo Group Ltd. said Friday it will sell a basic personal computer aimed at China's vast but poor rural market and priced as low as $199. Lenovo is the world's third-largest PC manufacturer, behind U.S.-based Hewlett Packard Inc. and No. 2 Dell. Who knew that Lenovo was so huge, and that it's so close to troubled Dell and wobbly HP? The "developing nations" computer wars are gonna make the US computer market seem polite and nerdly in comparison. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070803/ap_on_hi_te/ch ina_lenovo_cheap_pc"

Feed Engadget: Ion Audio set to introduce TAPE2PC USB tape deck (engadget.com)

It looks like Ion Audio is leaving no old school audio format behind, with the company now following up its USB turntables with its TAPE2PC USB tape deck. As the name suggests, the device will let you dust off your collection of Huey Lewis and the News cassettes and enjoy 'em in spruced up digital form. What's more, those looking to revive the art of the mix tape can use to system to make as many copies as they like, with settings available for both metal and CrO2 type tapes. According to Digital Lifestyles, UK retailer Firebox will be offering the device for "just under £100" (o $104) sometime before the end of the year, although we presume it'll also be available elsewhere. Still no word on a USB 8-track deck though.

[Thanks, Simon]
