That's just anecdotal. What about instances where clear pilot error has caused fatal crashes? You can't just pick out particular instances, one way or the other, and made your judgment on the issue based on that. I honestly don't know whether it's true or not, not having looked at any data on it myself, but I think it's a huge mistake to jump to conclusions like that.

An anonymous reader writes "A New York Times story reports that, 'Opening a new front in the government's battle against Internet gambling, federal prosecutors have asked four American banks to freeze tens of millions of dollars in payments owed to people who play poker online. ... "It's very aggressive, and I think it's a gamble on the part of the prosecutors," Mr. Rose said. He added that it was not clear what law would cover the seizure of money belonging to poker players, as opposed to the money of the companies involved.' Many players are reporting that their cashout checks have bounced."

I think you underestimate the chain reaction effect that happens when an MMORPG doesn't "cater to a niche of Apple fans." The rather large WoW guild I was in at the time WAR launched discussed doing a mass guild reroll to WAR and then decided against it because a decent chunk of our members, all using Macs, didn't want to have to deal with installing Bootcamp. While only maybe five or six players couldn't physically play the game, they were popular enough among the other few dozen that everyone just ended up sticking with WoW after all.

New York Bill Aims To Restrict Games Containing Profanity 133

GamePolitics notes a new bill out of New York which seeks to prohibit "the sale to minors of certain rated video games containing a rating that reflects content of various degrees of profanity, racist stereotypes or derogatory language, and/or actions toward a specific group of persons." It goes on to say: "These games, containing adult images such as morbid violence, rape, alcohol and illegal drug use, as well as other malicious acts, are not appropriate for children under 18. This legislation will regulate the sale of such games." The full text of the bill is available. It also suggests that children who are exposed to in-game crimes are more likely to participate in real-life crime.

South Carolina Seeking To Outlaw Profanity 849

According to the bill it would become a felony (punishable by a fine up to $5000 or up to 5 years in prison) to 'publish orally or in writing, exhibit, or otherwise make available material containing words, language, or actions of a profane, vulgar, lewd, lascivious, or indecent nature.' I'm not sure if 'in writing' could be applied to the internet, but in any event this is scary stuff."

Being able to fake your way through a qualifications system does not mean you are going to be able to fake your way through the end job. If I forge a law school diploma it doesn't mean I'm suddenly magically qualified to be a lawyer.

One of the points of the movie that genes are not the sum of the person.

Except that more and more we are learning that they are. A good movie does not refute science just because it's entertaining.

Okay, I'm not sure if you know this, but what William Shatner did in Star Trek... It was not good acting. I mean, it's so comically bad, that it's pretty much a pop culture meme to joke about it. I have no dog in this fight, as I don't care about Star Trek either way and have no preferences, but when someone puts forth William Shatner as an example of great acting, I just have to speak up. That man, lovable as he may be... No. Not a good actor.

Wired is running an interesting article on the realization of past predictions with regards to online gaming and where we are headed for the future. The author predicts that the separation between online worlds like Ultima Online and World of Warcraft may be headed out of style, making your in-game persona as pervasive as an email address. From the article: "Because the current metaverse evolved largely out of videogames, it makes sense that it should be composed of fiefdoms - after all, you wouldn't expect a Grand Theft Auto crack dealer to drop in for a barbecue with the Sims. But there is reason to believe that the divided metaverse is merely a transitional phase, and that its component worlds will coalesce."
