Journal Journal: One Versus Two Spaces After a Period

A while back someone asked several people what they thought was a simple typographic question. They were thinking about doing a quick eye tracking study with a colleague and wondered if there was any empirical research available that showed that a single space after a period was "better" than two spaces, or vice versa. While they were mostly interested in this as a web usability issue, many folks were very interested in this for all sorts of reasons. In any event, there was a flood of email abo

Unisys Smoking Hot Demo at Linux World Boston 178

This year's LinuxWorld Boston started off with a bang...and a fair amount of smoke. Unisys apparently had a few problems launching their first demo, as our own Robin "Roblimo" Miller reports over at Newsforge (also owned by VA Software). From the article: "Less than an hour after the show floor opened at the 2006 edition of the Boston LinuxWorld Expo today, fire alarms went off and a plume of smoke arose from the server cabinet in the Unisys display. "I knew we had a magician scheduled," said one rattled Unisys employee,"but this isn't what I expected." Indeed, this was an unexpected event. It was a real fire -- or at least a considerable smolder, complete with firemen, evacuation orders (soon rescinded), and other hoopla. Photos and a video clip included."

Apple to Face iPod Clone Attack 394

chr1sb writes "The Age has a commentary piece outlining how Apple's domination of the online media market is continuing to grow, but speculating that significant competition from the likes of Nokia and Motorola will rapidly relegate Apple's presence in the market to a corner, just as clone manufacturing of IBM PCs dominated the initial success of the Macintosh. From the article: 'The iPod/iTunes system will move into a niche with Macintosh computers because Steve Jobs has again stuck with closed architecture and total control. This will happen quickly because mobile phones are being turned over about every year.'."

The article clearly states that the different markings usually arise when the two species are not geographically separated. The markings are used to allow mating with the correct species when the other species also lives in close proximity.

I think it's fairly obvious that human races arose in geographically separate areas. So, the natural mechanism is completely different and would indicate that human races did not come about to discourage interaction.
