Its an excellent article, enjoyed it. I think it unlikely that the majority of civilizations would converge to a state of idleness and pursuit of bliss. First, there are too many physical forms of life and ours with our needs of physical pleasure and/or need for idleness, at times, is probably not common to all. Second, regardless of the physical form, there are too many paths that civilizations could take. Some could certainly enforce a specific lifestyle - by bio-engineering, medication or by law and enforcement but there remains individuals always in our cultures that choose to be different. As with a more robust nations, there are always some who pursue travel and exploration as a hobby and a means of pleasure.

Solaris blew the pants off Linux for security and reliability and multitasking which are the first things needed to get the most of any high-end workstation.

I hope it's not true, because I don't think the move would do a thing to make the retailer a better, more successful business." Where will we go to buy soldering irons and those RCA to headphone jack adapters now?

Journal Journal: Take MSWin OS off the net and use Linux or Virtual OS

Sure most of use still need MS Office. With all the concern over hijacked Windows based machines, why not shut your WinXp(etc) machine off the net and resort to a Linux box for the purpose of surfing the net? Alternatively, why not create a virtual secure-Linux OS (Cygwin?) operating atop your MS Windows OS for the sole purpose of accessing the Web? Provide a secure (quarantined) RAM drive for the virtual Web-OS and only permit transfer of downloads to the real OS after verifying the files are c

Journal Journal: Give all email messages expiration dates

"Good morning Mr Phelps,... This tape will self-destruct in 5 seconds." And why doesn't all email messages have an optional expiration date/time? Wouldn't advertisers particularly those with weekly ads add an expiration date for their email after a couple of weeks? And confirmation messages (e.g. "Ok, Fred, gotchya") from friends, etc could be given a day or two to expire. Email could be filtered or tagged by the recipient with an expiration date just as anything going into the Junk folder expir
