why we are letting the government allow patent trolls to exist? They are a leech to the tech and innovation world. Here's a thought, you can only have claim in court to a patent infringement if you currently have or have significant evidence of working on a product that uses that patent. This would get rid of patent trolls that just sit on patents to sue people and companies.

I will give you the benefit that you probably have not made a game before, so you probably dont understand what MegaTextures really mean to an artist. Your statement is incorrect and too bad comments like these go out everywhere before actually doing some research into the topic. It may be slightly more work for an artist to pull off, but it also gives the artist more freedom to shape the game world that many of us will be spending hours in. Thank you Id Tech 5!

How Apple Is Beating Nintendo At Its Own Game 425

Zothecula writes "In an industry obsessed with polygon counts and frame rates, Nintendo's Wii console and DS handheld were the proverbial knives at a gunfight. They were grossly underpowered compared to the competition, meaning Nintendo could sell them at a profit from day one. Their innovative control methods ensured they still sold like hotcakes. An animated GIF of Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata holding a DS that printed money became the go to picture to run alongside quarterly announcements of Nintendo's gargantuan profits. If a disheveled man emerged from a time-traveling DeLorean with tales of a near-future Nintendo struggling to sell its latest handheld, I'd have been more surprised about the Nintendo thing. So what on earth happened?"

SSL/TLS Vulnerability Widely Unpatched 103

kaiengert writes "In November 2009 a Man-In-the-Middle vulnerability for SSL/TLS/https was made public (CVE-2009-3555), and shortly afterwards demonstrated to be exploitable. In February 2010 researchers published RFC 5746, which described how servers and clients can be made immune. Software that implements the TLS protocol enhancements became available shortly afterwards. Most modern web browsers are patched, but the solution requires that both browser developers and website operators take action. Unfortunately, 16 months later, many major websites, including several ones that deal with real world transactions of goods and money, still haven't upgraded their systems. Even worse, for a big portion of those sites it can be shown that their operators failed to apply the essential configuration hotfix. Here is an exemplary list of patched and unpatched sites, along with more background information. The patched sites demonstrate that patching is indeed possible."

Looking at the full list schema page there is no mention of a video game, even though the industry is larger than the music industry when it comes to revenue and sales. Copyright Law Is Killing Science 323

HansonMB writes "Whereas copyright tends to focus on protecting artists' ability to make money from their work, scientists don't use similar incentives. And yet, her work is often kept within the gates of the ivory tower, reserved for those whose universities or institutions have purchased access, often at high costs. And for science in the age of the internet, which wants ideas to spread as widely as possible to encourage more creativity and development, this isn't just bad: it's immoral."

The Vatican Lauds Hackers 375

angry tapir writes "Internet hackers have acquired a dubious reputation for piracy, sabotage and the spilling of sensitive secrets, but an authoritative Vatican publication appears to rehabilitate them and traces parallels between hacker philosophy and the teachings of Christianity. The charitable view of hackers was expressed by the Jesuit priest Father Antonio Spadaro in an article for the fortnightly magazine Civilta Cattolica, the text of which is vetted by the Vatican Secretariat of State prior to publication. Hackers should not be confused with crackers, Spadaro wrote, citing a definition penned by technology writer Eric S. Raymond: "Hackers build things, crackers break them.""

Submission + - Japan Earthquake May Have Shifted Earth's Axis (gizmag.com) 1

Zothecula writes: Using a complex model to perform a theoretical calculation based on a U.S. Geological Survey, Richard Gross of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has determined that by changing the distribution of the Earth's mass, the earthquake that devastated Japan last Friday should have sped up the Earth's rotation, resulting in a day that is about 1.8 microseconds (1.8 millionths of a second) shorter.
