Comment Re: Year of the Wayland desktop... (Score 1) 66

Wayland exists because many X.org and Linux desktop devs do not want to continue working on, or depending on X11. Reasons have been expressed elsewhere many times over.

If x11 works and is all you need, that is great for you. Unfortunately, people who can and will maintain x11 is not increasing, but in fact decreasing. So Wayland will become the future unless more people step up and maintain xorg server.

The slow development of Wayland is due to the fact that there is almost no money to be had developing the Linux Desktop. The Linux graphic stack requires consensus from multiple levels, so everything will be developed slower than on Windows or MacOS.

No one is lying, someone is wrong but this article is only saying their is 'No Evidence'. That is not a strong claim. There is no evidence that Omicron is milder. There is no evidence that omicron is more sever. The only information we have is that Omicron appears to be more infectious. You are jumping to conclusions.

We would have to look closer at the research paper. Everyone is working in a fog. Different groups are uses different, but valid methods, to learn as much as we can about omicron. That will effect their conclusions. There will be conflicting information as people release papers. Maybe someone made a mistake, but who? Maybe their are other differences that can explain the differences/

You need to ask what kind of scientific paper is it? A case study? A Original Report? A Review? A Editorial or Commentary? etc...

It seems that is no longer allowed on Freenode. I do not see a problem in a project, informing its users that they are moving to another network. Some liked the old staff, they are a known quantity, were as the new staff have made questionable choices. The takeover of 700 channels kind of proves, to me, that the new owners cannot be trusted because they are bad actors or incompetent actors. So it is time to move.

The sale of Freenode irc is questionable but would require expensive litigation to resolve. Something the old Freenode staff do not have or do not want to spend, so Prince Lee will get the network. It is much cheaper to start over.

His argument brought back into the limelight his own history of unprofessional conduct at MIT and other institutions. It does not help that Minsky, who he tried to defend, may have protect RMS. Minsky certainly turned a blind eye to inappropriate behaviours of RMS and others staff (RMS was not the only one) at MIT. unfortunately for RMS, RMS was removed, among others, so MIT did not have to dredge up that history. But people are now talking about his other actions and do not want to work with him anymore. That makes him a liability and the FSF, GNU depend and always has depended on funding and public opinion.

The problem for RMS is the open source and free source movement is trying to become a more inviting, safe and friendly work environment for women. RMS history and handling of the certain situations stands in the way for many people. Is he trying to change? in some cases RMS has acknowledged and changed his behaviour (changing the Saint IGNUcius routine is a example) other times he has not (insisting on the abortion joke in glibc). But he is a very difficult person at the best of times, so it will be a uphill battle for RMS and the FSF.

People are saying it is a bunch of hearsay, but it is documented. He is a public figure, and his actions have been told many times. Complaints have been filed and RMS is not unique in academia and the industry. He comes from a time when his actions and behaviour towards women were deemed "acceptable." This is no longer the case.

The public will only get to see court level evidence if and only if RMS takes people to court for defamation. If anyone has a case it would be RMS (if the statements are false). This is how it works.

It is not illegal to be a monopoly in the United States. It is illegal to abuse your monopoly position. Epic would have to prove that Apple is a monopoly and that Apple is abusing their Monopoly position through the Apple store, Apples walled garden.

Epic will have to prove that Apples locked down hardware and walled garden is an abuse of that monopoly. The thing is walled gardens are not uncommon in computer software or computer hardware industry. Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Google all control hardware products with walled gardens. It is not uncommon outside of video games and consumer products either. These walled gardens are not illegal and court cases have strengthened the legitimacy of the practice. There never was an opem market on the iPhone either, so Apple cannot be accused of destroying a market that never existed or was supported in the first place.

I doubt the Apple store and 30% is an abuse as it is common practice, even Microsoft have attempted this with their phones and ARM powered hardware. Kicking Fortnite off the Apple Store for violating TOS is not an abuse. Attempting to kick off the Epic game engine, which would impact many 3rd parties might be an abuse. I do not think Epic will win what they want to win.

I agree with Apple, Epic wants a free ride. Apple users are more likely to spend money in apps than Android users. Epic wants to maximize their profits. They are targeting Apple rather than Google, Microsoft or Sony because Apple is a lucrative market and Apple is not a customer like Sony or Microsoft.

Do you know who I think has a better case against Apple. Spotify. Apple owns their own Music store and streaming service. Anyone who competes with Apple Music (competing with Apple) has to paying Apple 30% for the privilege of competing with them on the iPhone. That is an issue. Epic does not compete with Apple in the same way Spotify does.

So Sweden is doing about as good (or bad) as L.A. county (roughly the same population), but L.A. county went through

How many hospital beds does Sweden have compared to L.A. County?
How Many ICU Beds does LA County have compared to Sweden?
How many mechanical ventilators does LA County have compared to Sweden?
How easy is it for LA County to get more ventulators if needed compared to Sweden?
How easy is it for LA County to create more beds compared to Sweden?
What is the quality of the healthcare in Sweden compared to L.A. county?

The whole point of social distancing, stay at home orders, is to prevent COVID19 from overwhelming the health system. A overwhelmed health system leads to more deaths generally, not just COVID deaths. I think it is safe to say that the Healthcare system in LA County does not have as many beds, nor as many ventilators compared to Sweden. How those ICU are distributed and who gets their use also matters. Some ICUs, are exclusively used for. For example some are used for infants, kids and pregnancies.

The real challenge of COVID19 is how long a patient stays
A small percentage of people each year who catch the flu, need a a mechanical ventilator. They need a bed for an average of a week. Some more, some less. COVID19 is more infectious, a higher percentage of those infected need hospitalization, a higher percentage needs a ventilator. People hospitalized by COVID19 have a longer stay, thus taking up a hospital bed for longer. And lets be clear, it was not like these Ventilators, ICUs and hospital beds were sitting empty before COVID19.

Here is what you should do. How many people, in total, have died this year, compared to the average of the last 20-50 years? If the number is significantly higher, this is due to COVID19 directly or indirectly. When the health system is overwhelmed, it means a car crash victim who would normally get a ICU bed, a mechanical ventilator if needed does not get one. A person going to hospital may not get the same level of care because the staff is overwhelmed with cases and procedures that slow there response time.

Mac Clone Maker Psystar Files For Bankruptcy 366

StikyPad was one of several readers letting us know that Psystar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. We've discussed the Mac clone maker's battles with Apple extensively. The company apparently has over $250,000US in debt, and states that it cannot turn a profit in the current economy. "The Chapter 11 filing will temporarily suspend Apple's copyright infringement suit against Psystar, which is currently before the US District Court of Northern California. But once the bankruptcy protection is sorted out, the copyright case will resume." And PC Mag is reporting that, on the other side of the Atlantic, two new clone companies are just getting started. Like PsyStar, FreedomPC and RussianMac promise to deliver PCs with OS X preloaded.

SCO is going to lose, most see that now, but one can still sell it and that is ultimatly all that matters in the stock market. People are just trying to profit from it. Think about it, if I buy their stock at $2.00 and it goes up to $2.50 or $3.00 depending on how much I buy, I can make a pretty penny off of SCO's stock.

The stock market is not all about success or performance of the company, it is about the ability to sell stock higher than one bought it. If the stock market was an indication of the success of the company, then we would have seen less of companies like LinuxOne. There are absurd situations where company stock keeps going up and up and up even though it does not produce a single product or profit. In some cases growth of a company increases the value of a stock, not its profitability. Hell even Amazon told their stock holders that for some time they expect to not make a profit, guess what they are still here. One should not take the ups and downs of a company stock as an indictation of trust in the company or success of the company. If I buy stock, all I care about is selling it higher than I bought it. I do not really care how the company is really doing.

It is true that the profitability of a company, its image, and its success is an indication of how high or low the stock will go. One should buy stock because they beleive they can sell it for more. So long as the company is not going out of busniess, one can make a profit off it. SCO is not going out of busness (yet), and while one may not buy their stock now, it has been profitable in the past because one was able to sell the stock for more then they bought it.
