The only reason why it is an issue at all is because a large majority of women, myself included, would select purse, given the option. Leaving purse off the poll is a simple oversight, so it doesn't offend me and probably no other logical or rational female on /., but it gets a rise out of me, none the less. It would be the same rise a man would get if /. decided to run a poll that asked you to rank your favorite operating system, giving you purely Microsoft OS choices. The Linux junkies would browse the list, anticipating the opportunity to express their love of all things Unix based, and remark 'Huh, that's weird. They didn't even think about the whole better half of the OS world.'
