Talk-Powered Cell Phones Won't Need Batteries 197

alphadogg writes "It's possible that in the future conversations on your cell phone could generate enough electrical power to run the phone, without batteries. That's one possible outcome of recent work by a team of Texas researchers, who appear to have discovered that by building a certain type of piezoelectric material to a specific thickness (about 21 nanometers, compared to a typical human hair of 100,000 nanometers), you can boost its energy production by 100 percent. And the technology could power not just phones, but a whole range of low-power mobile devices and sensors. The breakthrough is an example of 'energy harvesting' that can convert one kind of energy, such as vibrations or solar rays, into electricity."

Feed A rare sip of the Thinkpad Reserve Edition? (engadget.com)

We're not in any position to tell whether this really is or isn't Lenovo's new Thinkpad Reserve Edition (cask aged for 12 years!), but whatever it is looks like it's got some leather going on up in there. Notebook Italia thinks this might have a little something to do with Lenovo's "Yoga" concept laptop, but for usability's sake let's all hope that hinge isn't some leather and plastic strapped together -- it's hard enough to keep our laptops' properly engineered metal hinges working well for extended periods of use.

Submission + - MythTV Install Screencast - MythDora 4.0

peterdaly writes: "MythDora 4 is a MythTV 'in-a-box' style distribution based on Fedora Core 6. With the help of a RedHat Employee and Author Jarod Wilson, MythDora 4 has made great strides in hardware compatability and ease of installation. It is designed to format your hard drive and install everything needed for a fully functional MythTV System. MythPVR.com has created a three part screencast of the installation process covering, MythDora Installation, Configuration, and MythTV Setup.

If you have had problem installing MythTV in the past due to hardware compatibility problems, the improvements make this is a great version to give another chance."

Journal Journal: I'm so proud, my first journal entry.

This is my first journal entry. Actually, I'm
not quite sure I understand why one would choose
to keep a journal on slashdot. So, of course,
the best way to gain some understanding is to
try it out. I happen to be watching TV, so I
picked TV as the topic. Topic list seems a bit
limited. Perhaps there's a good reason for that
which I've yet to understand.
