If you're still not convinced, go to ports.sh and test your browser now. If you're foolish enough to be using Firefox in 2023 you will discover that your browser can indeed scan your local ports for open services.

Just tried ports.sh with both Chrome and Firefox and it came back with nothing. Chrome has Ad Block Plus running and Firefox not

Ubisoft CEO Says Next Gen Consoles Closer Than We Think 326

An anonymous reader writes "Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot tells CNBC that he believes the next generation of video game systems isn't as far away as the public has been led to believe. Guillemot noted that public demand for the best machine possible, as well as coming competition from companies such as OnLive could spur Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo to roll out new systems sooner than they want. That's not good news for publishers, though, as he says games in the next generation will likely cost $60 million to create."

CCP Speaks On Player-Elected Advisors For EVE Online 70

Kheldon points us to an MMOGamer interview with Petur Oskarsson, Valerie Massey, and Dan Coker from CCP Games about EVE Online's Council of Stellar Management, "a democratically elected group of players who serve as advisors to the development team." The elections happen every six months, and regarding their effectiveness, Oskarsson says, "I did some numbers checking and the council has brought up 128 topics for CCP. And out of that, nine have been denied. The rest has been either injected into a backlog, or if it was already in the backlog it has been given an added prioritization." In a related interview on Massively, he said this is a tool he thinks most new MMOs should use, since it facilitates two-way communication, especially in situations like the recent economic exploit.

SpaceShipTwo Mothership Makes Maiden Flight 110

RobGoldsmith writes "Earlier this week images were appearing on the Net showing the WhiteKnightTwo craft doing some tests in Mojave. The earliest tests showed perhaps two of the engines being used, while a later test showed all the engines working and some further testing. Today the four Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308A engines finally carried the craft into the air. The maiden flight of the WhiteKnightTwo lasted just shy of one hour and happened today at around 08:15 local time, at Mojave air and spaceport. Rumors suggest that a Beechcraft King Air was used for a chase plane. The craft will be used to position Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo craft to fly into space; this is estimated to happen around 2010."

The Duke Is Finally Back, For Real 309

After the first announcement on 1997-04-27 and over eleven years of fresh start after fresh start, Duke Nukem Forever finally comes to your system. At least if your system is an Xbox 360. Jon Siegler, the webmaster of 3D Realms, confirms this on their site: "As has been reported around the net today, we can confirm that the game has indeed passed final certification with Microsoft on Friday the 15th of August (on our first try, no less). That means the game is done — it is now in the hands of Microsoft." Update: 08/19 10:47 GMT by T : Several readers have written with a correction: this announcement is actually about Duke Nukem 3D, rather than Duke Nukem Forever.

Comment How many decoders does one need? (Score 2, Insightful) 147

Why have a full 5.1 Dolby/DTS decoder etc on the CD/DVD drive? For an average user they are not going to have the 5.1 speaker set or need the decoder even if they do.

If they DO have a 5.1 spaker set, the higher up ones (like the Logitech Z-680's) have a hardware decoder built in.

You can also have a soundcard with the decoding built in.

With any 5.1 soundcard (like Turtle Beach Santa Cruz/Videologic sonicfury/xplosion, Live!5.1 and up, Herc Fort etc) you can get software decoders like in PowerDVD and WinDVD to do the decoding for you.

Thats four levels of Decoding already - will people actually pay for it on the drive, if in fact they either don't need it because not enough speakers, or don't need it because they have 3 other ways to decode the audio alrday?
