Journal SlashChick's Journal: How NOT to apply for a job. 14

Well, I just had a rather interesting and funny conversation over AIM with a hapless job-seeker. I thought I'd post it here for your benefit (names have been changed to protect the innocent.)

[14:12] Hapless Job-Seeker: hello
[14:13] simplisales: Hello :) This is Erica from Simpli sales. How may I help you?
[14:14] Hapless Job-Seeker: i was wondering if u could check out my resume :p
[14:14] Hapless Job-Seeker: (Link: [to posted resume])
[14:14] Hapless Job-Seeker: thanx a lot
[14:15] simplisales: You know you messaged me about this before, right? :)
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: :p
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: did i?
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: its possible :p
[14:15] simplisales: And I said:
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: what was ur answer
[14:15] simplisales: [12:47] simplisales: Then why the heck are you using "u" in your resume? Do you expect companies to take you seriously?
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: ahha!
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: thanx
[14:15] simplisales: And I see that advice went straight to the pooper.
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: *looks for exscuse*
[14:15] Hapless Job-Seeker: *cant find one*
[14:16] simplisales: ;)
[14:16] Hapless Job-Seeker: so
[14:16] simplisales: You need to brush up on your professionalism.
[14:16] Hapless Job-Seeker: no mind changing revalations then :p
[14:17] simplisales: I would also recommend reading a couple books on how to write a professional resume.
[14:18] Hapless Job-Seeker: in fact, i have decided that this is not going to get anywhere :p
[14:18] Hapless Job-Seeker: and have made a concious desicion to go and smoke lots of dope :p
[14:18] Hapless Job-Seeker: goodbye
[14:19] simplisales: Talk to you later.

Now there's a winner! ;)

By the way, we have filled the position advertised in my previous journal entry with someone from Slashdot. More about this later!

    • Speaking of Colossal... I interviewed for a sysadmin job at this hosting company Colossus once. The interview didn't go so well, because I forgot to smoke my crack before hand. Those people are clinically insane.

    • ...he was totally serious. The link was valid and went to a resume he'd posted online (which also had 'u' in it.)

I imagine that he was just a kid, but yeah. Scary.

I like to think of myself as a believer in democracy, equality, etc. I think it's a tragedy that so few people get involved in the democratic process here, that so few people vote in America. I imagine that if we could just get people involved in the process we could fix some of the problems that we have in this wonderful country.

When I see someone like this, though, it scares the crap out of me that their vote (should they bother to register and participate) is worth exactly as much as mine. Perhaps "Get out the vote!" drives aren't as good an idea as I imagined.

I'm not sure a low voter turnout is necessarily something to worry about, as long as it isn't the result of some other factor (intimidation, for example). It could even be a good

      • Machiavelli pointed out that, if you are good to many and bad to a few, the many won't care but the few will.

Do we really want the few to be in control because of their passion? Should they get more votes if they are extra passionate? If they blow up a few skyscrapers, do they get like a million votes?

Nah, giving everyone an equal say is far preferable. If they are not perfectly informed, the very act of voting will give them some motivation to be informed.

Illiteracy is forgiveable. Everyone who ca

No. It's not the few, and it's not about passion. They get a vote if they are capable of making an informed decision. Think about why the insane and children are excluded: would giving them a vote improve matters?

      • the Australian approach of compulsory voting would make this even worse: you'd be forced to vote for somebody.

Not quite - you are forced to turn up to the polling place, but do not have to actually cast a valid vote. You are able to submit a blank ballot, mark the ballot invalid or even write a political treatise on the ballot paper if you choose. However, turning up to the polling place tends to make people apply some thought to who they wish to vite for - if you have to go, you might as well make it wor
      • to have an extra option, "re-open nominations": if that "wins", nobody is elected, they all lose, and another election is held with new candidates

Interesting that you bring this up. The Libertarians have basically the same idea (here [lp.org]):
"In order to grant voters a full range of choice in federal, state, and local elections, we propose the addition of the alternative "None of the above is acceptable" to all ballots. We further propose that in the event that "none of the above is acceptable" receives a plur

Seems like even the most naive kid should be aware on some level that mocking the person you are trying to get a job from is not a winning approach.

  • At a certain video game store that I happen to be employed at, we get all kinds of losers dropping off resumes. Here are my top ten tips for those losers, to help them out in their fast-food future.

    1. a) Do not fold your resume. Especially do not fold it in half, then half again, then half again. If I have a choice between unfolding a piece of paper and throwing it in the trash, the choice will be easy.

      b) If you are dumb enough to fold your resume, at least unfold it before you try to give it to me. This

  • I am very disapointed that you refused to read my resume. Shame on you... err, u.
