We will do so using best anthropological practice--by being part of the Slashdot community and part of the conversation--using a method called ethnography. We would like to join the Slashdot community to learn about the commenting experience. The purpose of the ethnography will be used to inform machine learning techniques by identifying features in highly rated comments. If you do not want to participate in our study can easily opt out via a link as part of our profile bio. In doing so we will still be able to read the comments as will anyone else on the Web, as it is a public forum but we will exclude them from our analysis and remove them from any collection of public data for internal research purposes. Opt out options are available at: https://psal.cs.drexel.edu/optout/ It is important to note that regardless of whether an individual opts out, any raw data we collect for research purposes will not be made publicly available.
