I find some of the comments under this poll considerably disheartening. Most notably the one from the Anonymous Coward who grilled the original poster over his definitions of various military branches. I suppose a sad truth is that the Military Machine in our country plucks up a proportion of our population and churns out the sort of people who exhibit great arrogance in the face of regular "civilians" as illustrated above. It seems to me, he -and I know of people like him - seems to harbor the belief that military service places you in a sort of exalted position where you are immune to being the object of a bit humor like the rest of us. I've heard retorts in conversations similar to this thread to the affect of "they/we protect this great country, even your sorry ass!" Well, it seems to me, very often this country would only rarely need any sort of protection if we weren't such pudgy nation of self centered people, blind to suffering and unrest outside of our boarders except when the industry we call our "mainstream media" beams it out to our television screens, and even then it is blown off as "not my problem." So here we are, in a world where it is considered a vastly commendable act of "patriotism" to throw your life under the notion of "my country, right or wrong," when all too often, our country stands the great potential to be wrong, and the result is a bourocratic machine which churns out a warrior caste of society that can kill someone a dozen ways with toe nail clippings, needs an expensive gun or tank, and will ultimately retire after likely never serving out the job all this was intended to do on top of a small pension for the rest of his cynicle life, which will likely entail participating a solid Republican voting block of his colleagues, and praying every night to the hand made idol depicting Charleton Heston below his cot before dreaming dreams of shooting Clintons. Certianly my words paint with an extraordinarily broad brush, but Mr. Anonymous Coward, your idea of a military is what I speak to, and only serves to confirm my words. Though on the more realistic side, I would like to note that there are wonderful people who do serve in various military branches, though from my personal experience with them they seem to be the less "hardcore" and are only waiting to leave now that they've used up that college money. -- BTW, I bet I'll get a "flame bait" descriptor. Granted I could see why someone would percieve it as justified but... awe hell, I won't bother covering my ass :)
