We need to get back to on-prem software. SaaS is just a money sink that is killing more business than it helps. I bet this city could have modernized their SAP erp to the latest version and saved over half that money.
The concerns are overblown.
1. This is just in beta. It may never go to production
2. It is totally local, if you wipe your machine your history is gone
3. There is a simple on and off in the settings.
Windows Server is actually good. It includes everything you need to run. The problem now a days is that it isn't small enough for containers, but it is cheaper than suse enterprise or rhel
This seems to make an opening for closed source software. That way corporations and governments can point the finger at one person or corporation when an issue occurs.
Now is the time for Microsoft to bring back windows phone/ windows mobile. The interface is still better than anything out there, and they could get traction in this market.
We need to reverse this process. It starts writing software for the desktop again, and not just webapps. Then we need to be able to buy our music, movies, books, etc..., but from places that understand those items.
This makes Windows Server Standard edition seem cheap $500 for up to 16 core that is a one time fee. It also makes Windows 11 Pro worth it, I can get that license, if I have to pay for it around a one time fee of $99.
