Not necessarily. You assume that all 'self respecting Unix geeks' are touch-typists and learned The Proper Way to type.

I've had a computer at the ends of my fingers for about 24 years now (starting at age 6). I had no typing experience at age 6, so I just typed anyway I wanted to.

This resulted in my learning to type using ONLY my index and middle fingers. I do use the thumb, too, but only to hit the spacebar. I always had to look at the keyboard when doing this.

In highschool, I tried to take a formal typing class and tried to force myself to learn The Proper Way to type. It was a disaster. I could only type 25% as fast as before and made many more typos that way. I gave up trying to undo 10 years of "wrong" typing, dropped the class and went back to my own method of typing.

Fast forward another 15 years of my using my own typing system...

AT this point, I still only use 5 digits to type. (I only use the RIGHT thumb for the spacebar.) I can pump out just as many words per minute as a veteran touch-typist this way. To top it all off, 25 years of computer use has engrained the layout of the keyboard into my head. I occasionally look down at it when needing to hit a seldom used key, but for the most part, I touch type with 5 digits.

My hands are constantly floating back and forth across the keyboard as I do this rather than staying in one static place with only the digits whipping back and forth.

GOOD SIDE EFFECT: I am immune to carpal tunnel syndrome because of my uniwue style of typing.

now... where was I going with this....?

Oh yeah... I'm a *nix geek all the way. I also respect myself. BUT... I NEVER use my pinky when typing.

PS: I just notice while typing the last paragraph that I *DO* actually use one more digit.

My left ring finger is what I use to press CRTL and SHIFT.

So:

Left ring finger = CTRL and SHIFT
Right thumb = SPACE
L & R index & middle fingers = everything else.
