Comment Not that scary (Score 5, Insightful) 85

This isn't that scary when you realize what's happening and why they are more persuasive.
They are using tactics that are known to be effective, but that most people have a hard time actually doing because, emotionally, it's very difficult. Those who can do it end up being just as persuasive, if not more persuasive, as an AI - IF they have equivalent knowledge of the other person.
It was Pascal who pointed out that to persuade people you should first acknowledge their points of view and lead them to discover the counter-arguments themselves rather than imposing your own.
This is difficult emotionally, at least for me, because when talking to fascists, for example, it feels morally wrong to acknowledge their point of view. But if you can state their point of view in such a way that they identify with it ("yes, actually, that's how I feel and think") - maybe even state their beliefs better than they are able to themselves, with intimate knowledge of their concerns, it immediately builds trust with them and takes their defenses down a notch.
They may allow you to then help them discover the counter argument themselves, with some careful guidance.
This takes skill and an emotional resolve that few possess when discussing things that feel morally important.

Years ago I worked for someone who created an AI that worked just like the human brain.

The AI was classified by the government, but that was many years ago and since it has been declassified.

He described it to me, and itâ(TM)s brilliant. Simple and complex at once.

It is a quite different than any current approach to AI, and it makes so much sense.

I believe itâ(TM)s what everyone is looking for.

And you're telling me that you aren't technically capable of giving CarPlay a window or portion of the display? Hell, just use a separate smaller display for phones then. Obviously, this isn't hard, so they aren't being honest. They have other reasons for not wanting to support phones that they aren't saying out loud.
This turns me off to their brand.

It is clear you donâ(TM)t understand the barriers that those of other races face. We have racism encoded into the system, meaning those of other races cannot get access to what they need to thrive and be seen as easily as those of us in the majority.

Affirmative action recognizes that there is value and talent that will never get a chance because itâ(TM)s too busy trying to survive in the poverty or biases it was born into. These corporations are recognizing that minorities contain a vast wealth of intelligence and talent that they wonâ(TM)t have access to unless the system helps them rise above the additional barriers and obstacles they face that we do not face.

In other words, there are much better âoetoolsâ (your term) out there that will never achieve their potential or be seen because they are being buried and hidden in the circumstances in which they were born, and affirmative action gives them a chance that they otherwise wouldnâ(TM)t get.

Comment I would go digital if you could sell or share (Score 1) 64

When I first bought my Nintendo Switch, I went all digital... that is, until my kids got Switches and we learned the hard way just how painful it is to try and share digital games with each other. We finally gave up on that route and from that point on bought all games physical, swapping cards as we play through them.

It's a crime to pay the same for a game in digital format and not be able to sell or share it. I will no longer contribute to that on my consoles. And I'll be lobbying for laws to change this.

Comment Going with the Surface Pro 4 for my budding artist (Score 1) 478

My daughter is a budding artist and so we decided it was time to purchase a digital platform for her. We narrowed it down to either the new iPad Pro or the new Surface Pro 4. We decided for the Surface Pro 4, even though every other device in our home is Apple. Why? For one very simple reason: she is really into Minecraft and has invested quite a bit of time building her own world on our minecraft server. A server she cannot connect to with the pocket/mobile version of Minecraft - and this device will replace her aging (and almost dead) laptop.

So they just gave up on the whole prototype system and duct taped class-based OO on top of it? That's actually kind of sad -- It was a special aspect of Javascript that set it apart from other languages, and homogenization is boring. I guess maybe today's "Javascript developers" just couldn't wrap their heads around it.

They did not give up on the prototype system. To quote from the link you shared:

ES6 classes are a simple sugar over the prototype-based OO pattern... Classes support prototype-based inheritance, super calls, instance and static methods and constructors.

It's just sugar. It's all prototype inheritance underneath the sugar, and you are still free to not use the sugar and keep using prototype inheritance like you always have.

Comment Maybe it's because the music industry has adapted? (Score 5, Interesting) 196

Could it be the music industry has adapted enough that the average joe doesn't feel the need to pirate music as much as other media?
Yes, the adaptation certainly isn't ideal, but most of my friends now pay $9 a month (or so) and stream all their music and stream most new music. They are letting their personal music libraries slowly bit rot away as they increasingly rely on the cloud and streaming services.
Plus most digital albums can be bought without DRM these days.
But movies are a different story. You have to wait before you can even watch a movie in your own home, and movie media is always DRMed.

This is so disappointing to me. I waited forever for TomTom to come out with their GPS app, but now there is no way they will get my business. I was willing to pay a little extra for guaranteed quality, but not that much. As it is, I will now be researching the competition. No matter how convincing anyone's arguments in defense of this price, I simply cannot afford it, end of story. The most I am able to shell out for the app AND the kit is $75. The most I would have been willing to shell out for the app alone is $40.
I've had to cutback recently due to a corporate wide pay cut, and my iPhone service itself survived only because I dropped my landline instead. Now they want me to pay as much for the freakin' app alone as I did for the GPS in my wife's car?!? Ain't gonna happen.
