Most Useful OS For High-School Science Education? 434

Clayperion writes "I teach at a high school program for gifted students which emphasizes math, science, and technology. Currently we have two computer labs for the students: A new programming lab (all Dell PCs running XP, MS Visual C++, Eclipse, and SolidWorks for programming and CAD) and an old general-purpose lab (all Macs running OS X 10.3, with software ranging from some legacy OS 9 science applications to MathCad). Most of our students eventually pursue graduate degrees in science and engineering, and we would like them to have experience with the tools they will find out in industry. As we look to replace the old machines, there has been a push to switch to PCs with XP so that there is only a single platform to support. There are over 5000 machines on the district's network and the IT department is very small (fewer than 10 people), so the fewer hardware and software differences between the machines, the better. Without opening a flame war as to which one is 'better,' I'd like to know what those of you in the science and engineering fields actually use more in your labs (hardware, OS, software), so that we can decide which platform to support. It will most likely have to be either XP or OS 10.6, with very restricted permissions to students and teachers, as that is the comfort level of IT and administration, but I'll push for whatever would benefit the students the most."

Look at it this way- the recording and movie industries in America have tried for years to get court verdicts in their favor and have had one notable success (J Thomas, which is still under appeal if I'm not mistaken) out of the tens of thousands of cases they have pursued. Proving what was downloaded and by whom is nearly impossible, especially using the illegal means they use to collect the data in the first place.Having failed at litigation and unable to provide admissible evidence for criminal investigations the industry is now trying to notify ISPs using illegally obtained evidence that won't stand up in court, that you are file sharing and have them disconnect you from the internet. That doesn't seem right to me.

I disagree. I think arguing over evolution vs intelligent design is like arguing over what type of hammer a carpenter used to build your house. I find the possibility of all this just being a cosmic accident much less likely than it being the thoughtful creation of a superior being. I also counter the question of proving God's existence with the challenge of telling me what happened a microsecond before the big bang. Faith is not equal to ignorance, it is more equal to hope.

I think in a case like this, the Pirate Bay's lawyer should be seeking more than a mistrial. He should seek a reversal of the verdict and an end to all this. The Swedish government had it's bite at the apple and chose to use biased prosecutors and judges. (It seems a case for malicious prosecution could be made with the prosecutors and the judge in collusion with the copyright industry.) I would love to see them jailed and the pirates go free.

Part of the condition of their release from prison is that they give up rights that you and I take for granted and treasure. They wanted to put their dick where it didn't belong so much that they were willing to risk those rights. They gambled and lost, so to hell with them. I hope they put RFID chips in them and track them like the animals they are.
