As a user and creator of these types of apps, I would rather pay for good data (which I think my app has) than data that only has what has been paid for by others. Ad supported only work in games, as far as I can tell. Unless there is a compelling reason to open an app every day (and in travel apps and lifestyle apps, there just usually isn't) there's no way to make money on ads as you just won't get enough impressions.
