Journal Short Circuit's Journal: Hello, from another "other" place. 7

This time, from Spokayne, WA. The download rate isn't as good here as it was in Fargo, but I haven't had much of a chance to test it. I wasn't able to get the rsync process working to continue downloading OpenBSD.

Anyway, the reason I'm out here:

My brother is changing duty stations, and on his way from the East Coast to the West Coast, he stopped by Michigan to say hi to family. Needing a vacation, I hopped into his driving pool, and went along with him. I've driven through Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, most of Montana, and a little bit of Washington. (Matt drove through 70-odd miles through Idaho.)

I will say that...

  • 90/94 through Chicago during rush hour is horrible, and the signs are confusing. (EXPRESS vs LOCAL? First reaction: wtf?)
  • ..I drove within 100 miles of the Michael Feldman show.
  • ...Minnesota is a lot like Michigan, terrain wise.
  • ...North Dakota was a scenic drive of hills.
  • ...Montana (especially Western Montana) is beautiful country.
  • ...Spokayne, WA, is a beautiful city. Possibly enough to get me to move out of Michigan.

  • (catch the quote!)

The western part of Montan is what my family jokingly calls "God's Country".... meaning God seems to have given it every blessing possible. And that includes a low population. I fish / hunt on the Montana / Idaho border at Idaho's first town Pierce. [pierceidaho.com] Great area up there. And by that I mean stay away if you are from California, Portland, Seattle, Texas, or the East Coast! Don't ruin our state! :-)

    • I think I'll find it by October.

Anyway, I personally have a hard time imagining driving that stretch, especially alone. As it is, a couple of times we drove from the Twin Cities up to Winnipeg, which is similarly...well, uneventful. Certainly nice landscapes to see, but it's so...empty and repetitive. Undulating hills, farmland and forest, for hours and hours and hours, as the road goes ever on with the horizon off somewhere in the far distance. Hardly any towns to speak of.

Which is not to say I don't l

      • Right, on the quote. And right on the driving part being boring. The drive up there is tedious. But once you get there it isn't bad at all. Just put together your fly rodd and stick it under you windshield wipers and drive around till you find a creek you want to fish in. Great fun.

  • I have been to Spokane, WA twice, but never Spokayne. Are the near each other? <smirk>

Driving through Seattle at rush hour should be a real thrill for you too. Though not quite as bad as Chicago (though in Chicago at least the traffic actually moves instead of the stop-n-go crap people do here). ...Montana (especially Western Montana) is beautiful country.

Yep, I'd consider moving there in a heartbeat if there were actually any jobs. (though being a city boy I'd probably go
  • Mike I sent you that packet to your lawyers since you needed to overreact anyways and do all that instead of just talking to me and I still hear nothing. I've changed my cell number again. 2 months has passed to let things calm down, and I think its time to talk to me and stop running away. I've been fine and normal and given you space to chill. Now please grow up and lets get this settled. I want to be able to walk into the ATC room and see Benjamin if I want to and not need to worry if your going to go al

Time to take stock. Go home with some office supplies.
