Journal Short Circuit's Journal: DVD Screencaps in Linux? 7

I'm trying to get screen captures from Star Trek DVDs, but I'm having a horrid time of it. I'm using Linux, and none of the players I've tried so far seem well suited to the task.

Ogle doesn't have a built-in screen capture mechanism, and capture attempts from The Gimp seem to capture literally nothing where the video is supposed to be.

gxine has a capture mechanism, but skipping through episodes to get to the scene I want a shot of is difficult, and on one occasion caused the program to lock up.

And mplayer doesn't support DVD menus, which aid in finding the video clip on the DVD that I want to see.

I'm going to give xine a try next. Anything else?

Update

Xine worked. But now I've got a bunch of screencaps at 767x480, and I can't figure out the imagemagick command to scale it to 640x480.

DVD Screencaps in Linux?

  • GNOME has a screenshot applet, I think. I used it to get screenshots (then crop the unneeded bits with the Gimp.
  • don't forget to try kaffeine, it's basically a frontend for xine-lib , but it's a good one...

'Jump to position' and 'Save Screenshot' may work well for you... I'm not sure how well it works with dvds, but if you have the vobs ripped it should work just fine...
  • It's because the media player programs use something called a video overlay, which means that they write directly to the video memory, and don't go via X. This is a lot faster, which has its obvious advantages. The disadvantage, of course, is that you can't take a screenshot.

I'm sorry, I don't really know how to disable this.
    • Use a different video output, you can usually select between things like dga,xv,opengl,etc... just try different ones, I don't remember which one you'd need for that so just try 'em all...

(first ran into this back using realplayer 8 under windows 98... had an option to accelerate playback that disabled screenshots...)
  • i got one on my laptop
