Just an extra info on this: a cell phone will not be able to connect, not because that the plane is too far away from the tower, but rather due to the speed of the plane itself. Above 300km/h a cell phone cannot stay attached to a wireless network. It is also why in the landing approch (when the plane is slowing down) that you may (can, most of the time) connect to cell site.

I never switch off my phone on a plane and I fly about 20 time per year. As far as I know, those planes had always taken off and landed correctly. That would be a very very bad design/conception if such a low-power transmission would interfere with plane control. Specially since cell-tower transmit (and reach the plane) with 10x time the power of those cell phone.

There is for sure some free alternative out there, but on the off-the-self side non-free software, but for sure you cannot ignore IBM/Tivoli Netcool.

The Netcool suite have been purchased by IBM a few years ago. That portfolio came from Micromuse which was really telecom oriented. That suite can monitor easily the required 5000 nodes. Across the suite, there are multiple products that covers most of NMS needs from basinc alarm/stats collections such as receiving/parsing SNMP traps, SNMP pooling, node discovery; up to higher-level business requirement like alarm management, ajax or java GUI for alarm display; dashboarding, etc.

Feed Engadget: Canon's EOS 40D DSLR coming next month? (engadget.com)

We've already had a few indications that Canon would be releasing its still-unannounced EOS 40D DSLR sooner or later, but it looks like that day could now be fast approaching, at least according to this shot supposedly taken of a Best Buy computer. As you can see above (if you squint hard enough), it lists the EOS 40D with an "in-stock date" of 09-02-2007 and, according to the person that took the picture, it'll retail for $1599.99. The non-Canon website Canon-EOS-40D.com (linked below) also turned up a shot similar to the one above, and has some rumored specs for the camera to boot, including a 10.2 megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch LCD, DIGIC III image processor, and an ISO range from 100 to 3200, among other desirable features. As for whether those will actually pan out, we'll just have to wait and see.

Feed Engadget: Workaround enables Netflix 'Watch Now' titles to be decrypted, saved (engadget.com)

Looking for a new way to use FairUse4WM? Have a Netflix account? If so, go on and roll your sleeves up, as a crafty (and acrimonious) fellow has managed to find a workaround that enables you to not only decrypt the DRM-laced "Watch Now" movie files, but save them to your hard drive for future viewing. Admittedly, the process is somewhere between painless and potentially frustrating, but the gist of it involves Windows Media Player 11, FairUse4WM, Notepad, a Netflix account, and a broadband connection. Through a series of hoop jumping, users can now strip the "Watch Now" files free of DRM and watch them at their leisure and on any video-playing device they choose. Granted, there's certainly issues of legality mixed in here, but where there's a will, there's a way. [Warning: Read link language potentially NSFW]
