Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: Done! Deathly Hallows ***SPOILERS*** 12

***SPOILERS***

Well, I think I'm about the last one done, so I thought I'd go ahead and write. I just finished it and, first and foremost, one heckuva tip of the hat to JK Rowling. I know that one of the mantras of successful writing is making your characters have to face enough hurdles, but she did that in spades.

Once Hedwig died, you kind of knew that everyone was fair game. And how. And Snape really was good! Slimy, but good. I think that that was one of my first theories on how Snape could be good, but after re-reading Half-Blood Prince and the first 600 odd pages of Deathly Hallows, I knew he was evil. And, once again, she got me;-)

The first six all start off with a gradual buildup until the final climax. I couldn't believe how this one started so fast, and so powerfully, and just did not let up. I know this isn't the best analysis, but I'll hopefull have some more to add tomorrow. Since I think everyone's been warned about the spoilers, cut loose.

  • I thought the number of deaths was actually kind of over the top; granted it is "war" but still....

Aside from my previously mentioned "locket might be clothing" nitpick :-) I also thought there were scenes that were way too busy, but again I realize how difficult it can be to describe "action" scenes in a book. I am looking forward to this movie, but boy will they have to chop this one down to size. The sheer number of deaths alone will guarantee there won't be any slow motion 'NOOOOOOOOOOOO' death scenes a

I often tell my girlfriend that my contacts are a piece of clothing - she thinks I'm raving nuts, of course.

And I agree, I was rather upset at them killing Fred since Fred & George were my two *favourite* characters in the series.

      Ah, well.

And about the ending, it reminded me of good old British kids adventure books ending - they get older and have kids on their own, and they watch on as their kids have the same kind of adventures as they did.

Secondly, Harry gets the one thing he always wanted - a family
      • I hadn't thought of the family thing in that way yet, but you're right. He has the ability to gain all these great things, but what he really wants, is simply a family. Since Ginny and Neville were two of my favorite characters, i was happy to see their growth, and the depth that Ginny had with such limited time. The growth of Neville was also pretty amazing, especially when you consider how much of a doofus he was in the earlier books.

I was bummed that Fred died, too. I really liked the twins, and es

    • I had to re-read a couple of the action sequences as well. It took me three times through the part where Nagini was in drag to realize exactly what was happening. At first I thought the numbers of dead were a bit much, but then most of them would have been way too powerful of helpers for Harry to really have along. Like Dobby. I was bummed when he caught the knife, but I also saw it as a necessity for the plot.

I think the locket being clothes is debatable, but I can easily see that, given the way prec

Apparition was never explained well; could you only apparate to someplace you were familiar with? How familiar do you have to be? Obviously you can be pretty precise (since they could appear right on the top step of the Black house), but I assume only if you have physically been there before perhaps? But then again, didn't Harry/Hermione apparate to places neither had been to before?? (Too lazy to go back and see)

Also, the Accio charm seems pretty powerful; I was left wondering why Harry didn't bring his br

        • I was thinking specically about when Voldy started checking on his horcruxes. Instead of apparating to the old Slytherin place, he flew. Same as the cave. But he could've snapped his fingers and been there. And, especially, when Nagini was in drag and almost had Harry. Why didn't he just pop into the upstairs room and try and finish him off?

I'm sure the accio charm is amongst the most highly abused of any charm. I'm sure panty raids are far different in the wizarding world;-)

if i were voldemort, i might make it difficult/impossible to apparate in the immediate vicinity of pieces of my soul. i know that dumbledore and harry had to apparate to a location near the horcrux, so it's not completely out. on the other hand, the speed with which voldemort could fly didn't really seem to make it that much slower. it doesn't take much time for him to get from place to place.

About the Sword of Gryffindor - it is mentioned that whenever a true Gryffindor needs the sword, it presents itself.

Add to this that it is ancient magic by Godric Gryffindor himself and that Griphook had cheated Harry to steal it from him in the first place (immaterial of whether or not Harry had given him his word).

So, the sorting hat didn't really care and presented the sword to Neville because he *was* a true Gryffindor in need of the sword.
  • But I knew if I waited a bit, a "real" tribute would pop up, and be way more amusing than what I could come up with, with no effort on my part:

god there are so many hehe......

    • I'll have to watch those tonight, but man that's kinda scary. Its bad enough that you make a tribute like that to a fictional character, but Hedwig did very little. She carried mail, ate mice, and nipped Harry when he got obnoxious. Now I'm afraid to look and see if there's an Uncle Owen tribute somewhere.
  • he was a vindictive bastard. he did have a capacity to love, and that made him ok, but i wouldn't go as far as to call him good.
