I think what is required is not so much interests, but rather a presence. Let me give you an example. Check out Snooplife.com a website aimed at South Asians worldwide. Now you would think that such a broad category would make it almost impossible to form relationships and make it a solid community.
The main reason for its success (and I know of relationships formed from the website) has been the moderators's (namely me) to moderate nicely, encourage good topics, and present an online and mysterious, yet alluring presence. You join in as friends, and contribute and show the way, and make sure the crap gets deleted. I am of the opinion that people are willing to form relationships almost anywhere as long as the atmosphere is nice, and there is a central "dictator" (thats what they call me) to keep control. :)
