I was not a fan of Pandora either, but for completely opposite reasons. I found that the music it suggested was nothing like the band I input. For example, I would enter "Opeth" (melodic death metal), and after a few metal songs, it would start playing a melancholy country tune because they both utilized "minor chord progressions." Note that while I do enjoy country music, the reason I used Opeth as my seed band was because I was looking for melodic metal. I now use Last.FM and find that it groups bands together much more intuitively, albeit at the expense of missing the outlier bands, but its kind of like Wikipedia; after a few clicks from one band to another, you can find yourself in an entirely different genre, but able to trace the connection back to the original.
