This reminds me of bluetooth earpieces when they first came out. It was creepy seeing people walking around talking to themselves. You got quiet when people wearing them walked by because they might be on a call and the person on the other end of the line might hear you in the background. Douchebagy types were early adapters because it looked "cool" or was sufficiently expensive to reflect their economic status. It took time for people to learn the social do's and don'ts of this new technology. Now, most people that I know only use them when driving. You don't often see people randomly walking around talking into the air now. I think there will be a transitional period where Glass users may be perceived as obnoxious, but eventually a socially acceptable equilibrium will be established.

Could be, but that is going with the assumption that the foot prints exist in a single "mud", if you will, and not multiple sediments separated in time. I think the point being made was that whether or not it is fake doesn't actually improve the argument that humans and dinosaurs walked side by side. It is essentially null information that is being spun to promote one view over another.

30 years ago a microprocessor _was_ a computer. Nearly every add-on card and peripheral - even keyboards and mice have microprocessors in them now. One of my best tech antiques is a KIM-1 computer (KIM stood for Keyboard Input and Monitor - these were the system's distinguishing features). It was shipped with the entire machine's circuit diagram which fits very readable on a 24"x36" print out. I'm fairly certain that the circuit diagram for my Logitech mouse is more complex!

SpaceShipTwo Flies Free For the First Time 164

mknewman writes "SpaceShipTwo was successfully dropped off its WhiteKnight 2 mothership today from an altitude of 45,000 feet and glided to a landing in the Mojave airstrip." From the article: "More than 300 would-be passengers have already put down more than $45 million in deposits for $200,000-a-seat rides on the plane. The experience will include a roller-coaster rocket ride to a spaceworthy altitude of more than 65 miles, several minutes of weightlessness, a picture-window view of the curving Earth beneath the black sky of space ... and spaceflight bragging rights for years afterward."

Comment University & Biometric ID (Score 1) 578

My university uses palm scanners to identify students to allow them access to the campus gym. To my understanding, instead of using an actual image, it generates a unique ID based on sample points within the palm image and then discards the original. From that point forward it just compares the generated ID. I guess, it can technically store an image, but the system would likely need to be modified (cracked) to function in a way the manufacturer did not intend.

If you have doubts about the storage, usage, or security of your information, you have the right to question the system. A good question to ask yourself is "what could someone do with this information if it were abused or compromised?" This may help put such situations into perspective.

I too am allergic to flour, but recently I had to travel to Europe (specifically Greece and then Italy) for a conference and decided to try some local foods and just suffer through the reaction. Oddly enough, I found that I react much, much differently to the flour there than to the flour in the US. I could actually eat pizza, bread, and cake without little to no reaction. A whole day of wheaty-goodness in Europe seemed to afford me the same level of reaction as when I would eat a couple bites of a cookie back home. I am uncertain why this was the case though. I suspect it's either a different variety of wheat or it's processed differently. With that said, I totally voted for Europe as it was the first pizza I've had that didn't make me want to curl up and die after eating it. I've gotta look up some of the pizza places mentioned in this thread though!
