I know you are already receiving enough remarks related to your opinion that Open source projects would be better if core coders were paid, but I feel it is my duty to share my thoughts.
So I will remind you that until 'Open source' is a mainstream idea, the people who believe in it will work tirelessly and uncompensated (like with any new idea or project). At some point, our system of commerce will understand and master how to compensate for intellectual property without locking up the code, and all will be well in geekdom. Until the concept of Open Source and intellectual property can be understood by mere stockholders, they don't see how they will make money, hence they are not interested in subsidizing something that they do not understand will lead to the pot of gold.
You are not wasting your time reading Slashdot, you will meet women who also read it (if that is your intention). I know I love my geek. :-)
