Comment As a Professor from an European University (Score 1) 795

I totally agree with Cringely. The US is stealing our best Engineers and Scientists. They are expensive to educate and should stay in our countries. The US H-IB Visas are a curse that takes away our best students. Furthermore giving the US a competitive advantage over Europe, technology wise, because of that "brain migration" Let's hope that this becomes an issue to you over the pond, and please see if all this visa nonsense ends. Sooner rather than later. It could/should be a presidential campaign issue

"His debunking of Homeopathy (also on youtube) has so many reasoning flaws (even on scientific methodology) that is sometimes pitiful."

"Could you point out some specific flaws?"

Several are pretty evident. Homeopathy, does claim that very few molecules, if any, of a substance enter into a solution. Now Mr Randi spends a huge amount of time in his presentation stating that fact and claiming that, because there are no molecules, the whole stuff is crap! Homeopaths believe that something remains there and is actually activated when the dilution is performed. The problem, they say, is that current science is unable to measure that stuff. Mr Randi looks like a 16th century person that does not believe in radio waves because he cannot see them or measure them with the equipment he has. That is totally unscientific! To debunk homeopathy, statistical and medical tests are required, and only quite recently some results have surfaced, albeit with contradictory conclusions

Is Computer Science Dead? 641

warm sushi writes "An academic at the British Computing Society asks, Is computer science dead? Citing falling student enrollments and improved technology, British academic Neil McBride claims that off-the-shelf solutions are removing much of the demand for high-level development skills: 'As commercial software products have matured, it no longer makes sense for organizations to develop software from scratch. Accounting packages, enterprise resource packages, customer relationship management systems are the order of the day: stable, well-proven and easily available.' Is that quote laughable? Or has the software development industry stabilized to an off-the-self commodity?"

US Missle Interceptor Tests a Success 391

An anonymous reader writes to mention that the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and Lockheed Martin recently reported success in the test flight of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system. "THAAD is designed to defend U.S. troops, allied forces, population centers and critical infrastructure against short- to intermediate range ballistic missiles. THAAD comprises a fire control and communications system, interceptors, launchers and a radar. The THAAD interceptor uses hit-to-kill technology to destroy targets, and is the only weapon system that engages threat ballistic missiles at both endo- and exo-atmospheric altitudes."
