Comment Error In Summary (Score 1) 338

The summary contains yet another example of my number one pet peeve as a copy-editor: “do” being used as a generic verb. English is not Perl; some expressions are simply wrong in English. As opposed to “Diaspora, the privacy-respecting OSS social network, did a code release last week,” the correct form of the opening sentence is “Diaspora, the privacy-respecting OSS social network, released code last week.”

I am a much better writer and editor than I am a programmer, which probably means I'm the only person on Slashdot who gives a damn about the error discussed in this post. Nevertheless, it's important that every geek do [generic verb to describe a generic action --Ed.] what he or she can to fight the onset of the “idiocracy.”

I don't believe ANYONE should have the power of the US Presidency. Show me the checkbox for that and I'll mark it til it bleeds.

Then leave the United States of America, resign your citizenship, and start a new sovereign nation on whatever unclaimed land you can find.

Article II of the Constitution of the United States of America mandates the office of the President and his powers. If the most centrally important document in the nation offends you so strongly, you can safely stop calling yourself an American.

Saying something such as this is truly disgusting and I abhor the practice, but we're not talking about something as insidious as calling someone an "unamerican Communist" because she joined a writer's guild. In order to move beyond the ignoble history of such accusations, I offer an analogy: SinGunner has (assuming s/he is an American citizen, as implied by the implication that s/he is eligible to vote on a matter concerning the US Presidency) just proclaimed "I am a Catholic, but I feel that there should not be an office of Pope and that I require no human conduit between myself and the Divine."

Another, more geek-oriented, analogy: If you don't want a root user to have governing powers over the system you use, get your own workstation.
