For most things, transistors are reliable, inexpensive, and use little space or power. Thus, for most things silicon/germanium/gallium arsenide/etc. is the way to go. Most of these replies have to do with reproducing an audio signal, but when it comes to PROducing a signal I prefer tubes. Let me be specific: as a guitar player, I by far prefer using amplifiers that use tubes over ones that don't. Why? Because they behave differently - particularly one's with tube rectifiers. As you drive tubes harder, you will get more sag, and thus a "browner" tone. As a result, the amplifier is more responsive, behaving as an instrument in its own right rather than something that simply makes a given noise louder. My 2 cents.
