Comment Separation of church and state (Score 1) 995

Well, I might be wrong, but isn't there supposed to be a separation of church and state (SCS) in most of Europe? Seems like the lawyers of our demonstrator will have a pretty strong case:

(a) Either scientology is a 'real' religion, in which case you might wonder if it is acceptable that a police officer in function is so emotionally involved in Scientology that he feels insulted by the use of the word 'cult'. That's a violation of SCS, which is in most non-dictatorships a pretty basic constitutional principle.

(b) Or Scientology is not a real religion and the SCS is not applicable here. In that case, demonstrator guy is right: every religious group not accepted by mainstream society is per definition a cult (see source of all wisdom; also in OED).

Probe Captures Avalanche on Mars 69

mdekato writes "MSNBC reports that NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured an avalanche on Mars' surface as it happened. Very good still images show what must have been an awesome sight. 'The full image reveals features as small as a desk in a strip of terrain 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) wide and more than 10 times that long, at 84 degrees north latitude. Reddish layers known to be rich in water ice make up the face of a steep slope more than 2,300 feet (700 meters) tall, running the length of the image. Mars' north pole is covered by a cap of ice, and it even snows there. The scientists suspect that more ice than dust probably makes up the material that fell from the upper portion of the scarp.'"

Microsoft Trying To Appeal to the Unix Crowd? 468

DigDuality writes "With the news that Windows 2008 (recently discussed on Slashdot) will have GUI-less installs and be fully scriptable, that they've opened up their communication protocols for non-commercial usage and are providing a patent covenant (Redhat Responds), and now finally an interesting rumor floating around that Microsoft will be taking on GNU directly. Has Microsoft totally switched gears in how it is approaching the Unix and FOSS sector for direct competition? According to an anonymous email leaked from a Microsoft employee, it seems Microsoft will be developing a framework that will be completely GNU compatible. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, said on Friday (23 February) that they are aiming to restore a Unix-like environment to its former proprietary glory, at the same time proving that Microsoft is committed to interoperability. Ballmer emphasized that Microsoft's new strategy is to provide users with a complete package, and this includes users who like Unix environments. According to the supposedly leaked email, UNG, which stands for UNG's not GNU, is set to be released late 2009."
