NSA representative warns about Russia spying.... meanwhile the US has been spying on virtually the entire planet for decades. And its not just the US that behaves in this hypocritical way... Russia, China, UK and many others too. Governments violate the privacy of citizens in other countries.. then cry persecution when other countries do it to them. And its not even a left/right thing -- both sides of the ideological aisle support mass surveillance. Spoiled children behave better -- and these are our supposed leaders..

You have a point that care needs to be taken least we silence free speech. On the other hand, you can bet Zuckerberg, like all every other owner of a website that allows public comments to be posted... would use some selective judgement to censor posts if some politician accusing him of being a serial child killer using Facebook as their podium One doesn't have to go to the extreme of silence conflicting political views. There is even some grey area where it's certainly debatable to give benefit of the doubt. What is perfectly clear though is there is also some posters that are obvious trolls abusing social networking to spread slander, racism, hate and lies. First poster has it right. Speaking as a former liberal (now a independent).. you are right that many conservatives, that claim to be about "smaller government" support a heavily policied surveillance state (which many of them frame as "Freedom")... Now the rest of the story.. .so do many Democratic politicians. Obama could have downsized the NSA and taken away some of that surveillance power and didn't. The way to deal with this issue is start defunding orgizations like the NSA, CIA, FBI. with the understanding that every time someone misbehaves in the world we don't use that as an excuse to move in the direction of police state where everyone fears their government instead of government employees fearing the people.

Bingo. Lots of politicians, both left and right, are a greater threat to freedom then terrorists. The level of surveillance that already exists is far beyond the imagination of Orwell.. and they want to spy even more! In their tiny little paranoid brains, they "generously" give way our freedoms because criminals and terrorists also exist. They are inch-by-inch turning America into prison while framing it as a defense of freedom.

We should give our government total access to our lives. Cameras be put in every room of our homes by law with full access by the state without a warrant. If someone has nothing to hide why should anyone care? Those in the NSA, FBI and any politicians, left or right, advocating even further invasion of our privacy are actually heroes. We should be making their life even easier by getting them all brown shirts to stitch their nationalist flags on. This way it makes it easier for them when they eventually walk around demanding papers from everyone for looking suspecious.. And if anyone disagrees.. .we should accuse them of being supporters terrorism..

It's debatable whose the worse offender of privacy rights. While Chinese certainly shamefully spymore of their own citizens --- the US spies more on everyone else's citizens Then some American nationalists have the Chutzpah to lecture the Chinese on spying? And the US isn't alone. Even my beloved Canada is part of the five eyes that helps the US spy on the planet. And there there is the 14 eyes too. If we want government spying to end in the west, we have to lead by example. Just self-righteous pointing fingers at others while we are the worse violators of digital privacy on the planet is absurd.

Guaranteed AT&T, Google, Cisco, Microsoft, and many other large American IT companies have back doors to their products which they give the NSA access to. Some American "patriots" then have the Chutzpah to mock the Chinese for spying... when the NSA and CIA have been spying on virtually the entire planet for years. The US forefathers, good principled men, fought for their liberty from foreign oppressors that attempted to dictate to them how they should live. Now some Americans are trying to dictate to the world how they should live by using spy agencies like the NSA, that engage in mass surveillance of nearly the entire planet, in order to mine information to selectively topple governments they don't like. I could understand non-democratic countries behaving like this but the US that claims to be a democracy? I'm old enough to remember when Americans used to, rightfully, mock the Soviets for mass surveillance. Now its mainstream American politicians that are behaving like the Soviets. And its not even a partisan issue. Both Democrats, even alleged conservatives have been supporting massive invasion of privacy of foreigners and to lessor degree even Americans. What happened to the US being the good guy?

"It's not as if the Greeks were looking after their marbles when we pilfered them" Untrue. They survived over two thousand years just fine under Greek control. It was actual Lord Elgan that damaged them when he incompetently ripped them off the Parthenon. Granted this pattern of thievery from the British state was from a different imperialist era but that the British Museum now ridiculously wants to hold copyrights on effectively stolen property is shameless. If anything the British museum needs to start returning some of the property that was stolen or purchased under dubious occupation conditions during the colonial era. Keeping stolen artifacts as if they "own" them is only a perpetual source of hostility for both for the Musuem and the modern British state. This isn't a criticism of all Brits. Modern British aren't the exact same people as Brits of that era. Today it's a melting pot much like the US. Polling shows the majority of Brits actually agree some artifacts should be returned (including the Parthenon Marbles).

What a load of racist sound revisionist horse manure. A. The Marbles survived fine for over two thousand years in Greece without the "help' of Elgin that damaged them removing them. While true he took it during Ottoman occupation of Greece this doesn't mean it was the Ottomans's to give. They too stole them from Greeks by "generously" giving away something that was not theirs. B. Your argument that since thievery has been around for thousands of years ergo the British museum's own ownership of items that were stolen from around the world during imperialist British empire days is justified... is idiotic. It's like claiming that Germans can keep what the Nazis stole. .
