That's quite a story you have. Although considering you referenced 1998 as the year this happened I would hardly consider it remotely relevant here in 2005, 7+ years later. Your supposed explaination that was recieved from microsoft of 'it was a failure in the NT kernel' just adds to the credibility of your story. I know you were probably in diapers then, but linux wasn't terribly pretty to run back then either.
It was probably close to the peak for Solaris though, I'll give you that.
