I think there is no effect on speculation by either mentioning or not mentioning it. People are intensely curious about the fates of others. Nearly the exact same conversation would be going on in the absence of a stated cause of death whether Marc made this statement or not. However, we also know that people are on average rude asshats, so I'm sure media and other interested parties have been hounding friends and family for any information anyone would be willing to leak, so I get his desire to publicly remind people they shouldn't intrude. I have no opinions on whether he came off like a jerk or not in this case. I think this is a dumb thing to waste time debating.
