Ask Slashdot: How Do I Explain That Humans Didn't Ride Dinosaurs? 278

p00kiethebear writes "I have a wonderful and beautiful girlfriend who treats me right in every way. We've been together for almost a year now and everything seemed to be going perfectly until this morning. Over breakfast we were discussing dinosaurs and she told me a story about how her grandfather, fifty years ago, dated footprints of a dinosaurs and a man that were right next to each other to be within the same epoch of history. I laughed when she said this and then realized that she wasn't joking. She believes dinosaurs and humans walked at the same time together. The odd thing is that she's not religious, it's just what her archaeologist grandfather taught her. More important than just backing up evidence to the contrary, how do I explain this to her without crushing her childhood dreams? Is it even worth discussing it further with her?"

Woman's Nude Pics End Up Online After Call To Tech Support 197

Tara Fitzgerald couldn't find the nude pictures she planned on sending to her boyfriend, but instead of just taking more, she decided to see if a Dell tech support call could fix her problem. Apparently the tech support guy found them. Unfortunately, he then put them up on a site called "bitchtara."

HTC Android Smartphone Stores Browsing Screenshots 179

Mad Hamster writes "Boy Genius Report points out that the HTC Droid Incredible, using the Sense UI, 'will periodically store screenshots of the contents of your web browser.' These shots are stored in such a way that they are not easily deleted. 'They remain when the current browser session is closed, they remain after you clear the browser history, and they remain after a full factory reset,' though there is a way to delete them manually."

Movie Studio Finally Sees the Light On Rentals 213

Griller_GT writes "After months of conducting studies about the effects of delays on sales of DVDs, 'Paramount Pictures has agreed to provide its movies to Redbox on the same day they go on sale.' A Paramount exec said, 'Those people who want to rent are going to figure out ways to rent, and us restricting them from renting isn't going to turn it into a purchase.' Gee, who would have thought of that?" Reader DisKurzion sends in news of another movie business experiment underway by an Australian company called Distracted Media. They are raising funds for a movie called The Tunnel by letting people invest in individual frames for $1 apiece. When the movie is complete, it will be released for free on torrent sites.

The Medical Benefits of Carbon Monoxide 177

tugfoigel writes with this excerpt from the Boston Globe: "For more than a century, carbon monoxide has been known as a deadly toxin. In an 1839 story, Edgar Allan Poe wrote of 'miraculous lustre of the eye' and 'nervous agitation' in what some believe are descriptions of carbon monoxide poisoning, and today, cigarette cartons warn of its health dangers. But a growing body of research, much of it by local scientists, is revealing a paradox: the gas often called a silent killer could also be a medical treatment. It seems like a radical contradiction, but animal studies show that in small, extremely controlled doses the gas has benefits in everything from infections to organ transplantation."

Everything should be a means to an end with the goal being to protect and support your family.

If your job pays good money, be a man and provider and sacrifice your happiness so your child can have a better life. Having 8 hours of boring yet high paying work is better than having 8 hours of fun yet low paying work, because the boring life is better for your wife and kids welfare.
Man the US is obsessed with a black/white view of the world. Suppose for a second that the option is not going from 50K/yr to 30K/yr, but instead 100K/yr to 50K/yr. If you've taken your 100K/yr and not been stupid with it (rare I know) you could be sitting with a house and two cars that are paid for like me. (cars not SUVs, and house not McMansion). At that point your expenses are so low that you'd really only change the type of hotel you stay in on vacation and reduce the exess at Christmas.... oh and besides providing adequately for your family you can also be a role model.

The secret to money is simple: Have more than you need. The problem with people, not money, is that too many think they can get to this state by working on the first part.

Journal Journal: Garbage vs radio

If you put garbage on my property I can take it and do what ever I want with it. If you broadcast a telivision signal to my property it's stealing if I use it any way. If you don't want me using something the best thing to do would be to stop sending it to me.

Quality time implies a sort of quick intense activity. It does not exist. Quality and time are the same. Quality is generated as time is consumed. There is no other way.
