Those advertisers have lost their Twitter contacts, sometimes multiple times. 2FA is hit-or-miss right now, and people are randomly losing (or gaining) a significant number of followers. It's like they are trying to restore some stuff from backups but breaking other things during the process.
Mastodon is too complicated, I agree. If they do succeed, it will be because everyone congregates on a single server and leaving the fediverse largely unused.
I'm sure that they can keep things running for a while, but I'm not confident that they will be able to do so long-term. They lost so much knowledge in such a short amount of time and it only takes one big fuck-up to throw everything out of alignment.
> Like the idiots screaming about leaving the US and going to Canada.
It's a lot easier to leave Twitter than it is to go to Canada. You can't just waltz into Canada, especially if you're over 40.
This is 100% false -- they are currently independent and in the process of being acquired by Sony. They were a part of Microsoft from 2000 until 2007, so your information is about 15 years out of date.
I'm not sold on it, and it's actually kind of scary, but it lets people move "money" wherever they want to without governments getting in the way. Given enough traction, it would fundamentally change the finance world.
> but not with Apple opening anything.
I don't mean in terms of source, but rather user access to things which were previously walled up. Things like NFC, something which has long been accessible on Android, but only recently-ish on iOS.
As for building off of AOSP, it sounds good in theory. However, Google has been moving more and more core functionality into Google Play Services. This is both a way of keeping devices up-to-date after OEMs have left them high and dry and as a way to have more control over the platform.
The Nexus line was the "Android Developer" phone, but those days are long gone.
Apple is (very, very slowly) opening their walled garden, and Google is squeezing tighter and tighter.
You can't use Google Pay without passing "Safety Net". With LineageOS, you will not pass without using Magisk.
> Personally, I've never found any value in Google Pay. Google already has access to my address book and schedule. Do I really want to concentrate all of my financial transaction records into their hands, too?
It is more secure than a naked credit card, in that a unique token is generated for each transaction.
You also lose Google Pay contactless payments. Basically anything which needs to pass SafetyNet will fail with Lineage unless you play a bunch of ever-changing games.
I ran Lineage for about a year after my OnePlus 3 stopped receiving updates, and I never knew for sure if google pay would work or not until I tried it. If it didn't work, usually an update to Magisk would fix it in a week or two. I got tired of playing the game and replaced the phone.
... and you lose most banking apps unless you play a cat and mouse game with Magisk.
It's cool and all that Lineage exists, and I've used it in the past, but it definitely has shortcomings.
It is justified, but you disagree with where the line should be drawn. Surely you would not be upset if Facebook took down photos of child pornography, or even death threats against you or your family.

It happened in July when Texas was not doing contact tracing and pretending that covid didn't exist.
We have absolutely no idea what the long term effects of this are.
This is utter bullshit and was picked up by many other news outlets before WaPo.
