So if they treat Edge a certain way (automatically pinned when default and such), then if another browser becomes default, Windows should do the same thing for that browser. So no, they are not picking out every single thing, it's part of an overarching thing.

The article does say "However, they remain only 1% below the latest peak, implying that any short-term jump could cause China’s CO2 emissions to rise to a new record." But at the same time, they also show, in a graph, this is absolute amounts of CO2 emissions, not just in comparison. That would answer your question. :)

In several countries this existed already until last year. Here it was 7 euros for ad free viewing of videos. No other benefits, just ad-free. Then they axed it and the only option was to get full Premium if you simply wanted to avoid the ads (without using ad blockers, Brave (which still works for blocking all YT ads btw) or such.

Maybe slightly off-topic, but from a non-US person point of view, these checks that I always hear about are so insane. Why do these things still exist and are so widely used? You need to pay for something? Use your bank card, credit card or mobile payment option. Personal transaction? Use one of those person-to-person mobile payment apps. You need to get your salary? Employer puts the money on your bank account.

It's baffling to me this whole check-system is so important over there. Things are so much smoother with the other mentioned methods.

Google has confirmed to 9to5Google that it is not bringing pop-up ads to Maps:

Rather, this UI is actually “Promoted Pins,” which have existed for some time. Google says that this UI does not pop up on its own – despite the user claiming they did not tap the screen, we were able to replicate the exact same UI by tapping on a location on the map, so it seems the screen was either touched by accident or a glitch was at play – and that it disappears automatically after a few seconds.

Finland is the same. Earlier this year I got my tax info and they said "you're getting 35 euros back, congrats!" It becomes more tricky when you have income from abroad, which I used to have. But then you tell them: I got X amount salary last year from this country. And then they correct the info and tell you how much tax you need to pay next year. Which you can choose to do monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or in 1 go. And yes, you can just do this online. It's a service provided by the tax office. You don't have to get a tax man to do the work or buy software or fuck around with papers. You know, like most modern countries.

It won't do this. It just means, if implemented, the companies running the models will be enabled to do more and do it faster at the same costs as in the old situations. So it will simply accelerate the path that the companies are already on. Instead of being able to (economically) do X and Y in a year, they can do X, Y and even Z this year.

“One-quarter of the US base of Apple customers represents tens of millions of users, an enormous audience relative to what individual media outlets can expect on their own,”

So what the the actual article implies, is that we're talking about an increase from 15% to 24% of Apple customers in the US. Let's take just iPhone users. A quick Googling shows that there are some 135 million active iPhones in the US, meaning they would have about 32 million active subscribers to Apple News+. An increase of about 12 million in a year. That's a pretty significant increase. Of note, though, is that if someone has Apple One (whatever that is), they also get News+ with it.
