US Air Force Buying Another 2,200 PS3s 144

bleedingpegasus sends word that the US Air Force will be grabbing up 2,200 new PlayStation 3 consoles for research into supercomputing. They already have a cluster made from 336 of the old-style (non-Slim) consoles, which they've used for a variety of purposes, including "processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and 'neuromorphic computing.'" According to the Justification Review Document (DOC), "Once the hardware configuration is implemented, software code will be developed in-house for cluster implementation utilizing a Linux-based operating software."

Make sure that your power brick is capable of 90-230V. I can't tell you the amount of visitors from the US I have had wander up to me and ask to borrow a UK PSU It's because they just changed the power lead to the PSU and didn't spot that it was rated at 90-120V. Once the magic smoke escapes, there's no other option than to buy a new one.

"Transport for London (TfL), which will today announce a six-month trial of ISA, estimates that, if two thirds of London drivers used the devices, the number of road casualties in the capital could be reduced by 10 per cent." Most cars in London don't actually move fast enough to get to 20Mph, so how exactly would this system save lives? Most UK private cars have had their speedometer set 10% fast anyway (reads 33 when doing 30 and 77 when doing 70) in an effort to both slow you down and remove te vehicle manufacturer from any possible law suits regarding speeding fines.

Sony, Microsoft Begin Battle of Virtual Worlds 180

Slatterz writes "Sony and Microsoft are poised to do battle in virtual worlds. The console kids both announced Second Life-style virtual environments at the Tokyo Game Show today. Both games show striking similarities to Linden Lab's creation. Players are represented by avatars which live a virtual life — engaging in relationships, going about day-to-day business."

I agree that the brain is not wired in a way that causes a belief in any form of deity.

If a child was born of deeply religious US parents (for example), from a family of several generations of religious belief and that child was adopted, taken into a family and raised in an environment with absolutely no religious influences we can pretty much guarantee that they will not believe in any god. As beings we are born as a blank slate.

Religion is taught along with pretty much everything else that makes modern humans who we are.

Television

Journal Journal: MythTV PVR for Sky Digital subscribers in the UK.

So, I have decided to work on a mini-Howto for getting mythtv working with Sky Digital here in the U.K.

The first thing to note, is that all of the required stuff for making this work is out there in the wild already, so I am not going to re-invent the wheel and I will link to external information sources whenever possible. I will also make sure that I get a copy of all the information just in case it trys to disappear from the current sources.
