As a hardware developer of IoT devices I use Windows and Linux for development. Sometime one is more convenient than the other (depending on the task).

Without the Control Panel features (like Device Manager and Network and Sharing Center), finding the COM port for a serial adapter, and easily changing IP addresses is going to be more diffcult. Linux will now be the more convenient.option so I don't think I'll use Windows for much, other than spreadsheats.

I totally agree with all of your criticisms. To me the greatest benefit of this idea (if it works) is that there is huge redundancy. Flying interstellar objects can take out some of the units and others might still make it.
One complex system is more vulnerable to failure than a bunch of spatially distributed/redundant systems.

I'd switch the focus of the lab to doing AI research that speeds up vaccine research. Making it more of an applied field than pure research. The findings could be vetted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Hopefully they could increase their output!
