Comment We use a shredding service.. (Score 1) 1016

The outfit I currently work for disposes of an unbelievable amount of hardware, including hard drives. Due to *government* requirements, every drive gets disposed of via a company that comes to the site with a portable shredder. Every drive is inventoried prior to removal, secured in a lock box, inventoried prior to disposal, and then shredded. The outfit I work for destroys so much shit it makes me ill. It's so wasteful it boggles the mind. I guess when you're in the business of making money from money, you can afford it. Too bad none of the bean counters have a clue as to how much they'd recoup if they sold the stuff they threw away instead of paying a disposal outfit to take it.

I would find it not only ironic but infuriating if my daughter's college would ban laptop use, since the purchase of a Mac was mandatory given her chosen major. The real question here is when is laptop use appropriate? Certain classes dictate the use of a laptop. If it's internet use that's detracting from the classroom experience, then as some folks mentioned, simply turn off the wireless for that area.

Grad Student Invents Cheap Laser Cutter 137

An anonymous reader writes "Peter Jansen, a PhD student and member of the RepRap community, has constructed a working prototype of an inexpensive table-top laser cutter built out of old CD/DVD drives as an offshoot of his efforts to design an under $200 open-source Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printer. Where traditional laser cutters use powerful, fixed-focus beams, this new technique dynamically adjusts the focal point of the laser using a reciprocating motion similar to a reciprocating saw, allowing a far less powerful and inexpensive laser diode to be used. The technique is currently limited to cutting black materials to a depth of only a few millimeters, but should still be useful and enabling for Makers and other crafters. The end-goal is to create a hybrid inexpensive 3D printer that can be easily reconfigured for 2D laser cutting, providing powerful making tools to the desktop."

Possible Treatment For Ebola 157

RedEaredSlider writes "Researchers at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases have found a class of drugs that could provide treatment for Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever. The new drugs are called 'antisense' compounds, and they allow the immune system to attack the viruses before they can do enough damage to kill the patient. Travis Warren, research scientist at USAMRIID, said while the work is still preliminary -— the drugs have been tested only on primates — the results are so far promising. In the case of Ebola, five of eight monkeys infected with the virus lived, and with Marburg, all survived. The drugs were developed as part of a program to deal with possible bioterrorist threats, in partnership with AVI Biopharma."

Verizon Charged Marine's Widow an Early Termination Fee 489

In a decision that was reversed as soon as someone with half a brain in their PR department learned about it, Verizon charged a widow a $350 early termination fee. After the death of her marine husband, Michaela Brummund decided to move back to her home town to be with her family. Verizon doesn't offer any coverage in the small town so Michaela tried to cancel her contract, only to be hit with an early termination fee. From the article: "'I called them to cancel. I told them the situation with my husband. I even said I would provide a death certificate,' Michaela said."

Warner Bros. Acquires Turbine 57

NNUfergs writes with news that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group has acquired Turbine Inc., creators of Lord of the Rings Online, Asheron's Call, and Dungeons & Dragons Online. Terms were not disclosed, but the Boston Globe claims the price was somewhere around $160 million. "Warner Bros. Interactive has bought a number of game development houses in recent years, in a bid to become a major power in video gaming. In 2007, the company purchased TT Games, a British firm that develops family-friendly products like Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman. In 2009, Warner Bros. bought the assets of bankrupt Chicago game company Midway, maker of the popular Mortal Kombat games. And earlier this year, it acquired a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios, another British developer, which created the hit game Batman: Arkham Asylum. ... Acquiring Turbine will give Warner Bros. total control over all future video games based on author J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved Lord of the Rings novels. Turbine holds an exclusive license to make an Internet-based game based on the books, while last year, Warner Bros. won a license to make non-Internet-based Tolkien video games."

...back when I was in college. Part of my CS studies included classes that involved coding for the AS/400, the VAX/VMS and COBOL. I had the good misfortune of being at a school that was rather relaxed in terms of security and almost everyone left their "password" the same as their user ID, which just happened to be the same name used for their personal directories. It didn't take much time to sort thru every possible directory and copy every possible file you could to "learn from example". During the next semester, I managed to finish all the labs for my first course of C programming in 3 weeks, and I got a "B" on the final. Did I cheat? Yeah, I guess you could call it that. Did I learn anything? Sure did. Take security seriously.
