As a Portuguese citizen, I'm shocked to see how Americans think this is a terrible idea that will suck money from taxpayers and not solve anything. Portugal decriminalized ALL drug use 20 years ago and, as far as I understand, the results have been overwhelmingly positive. I guess when you grow up with it, it just seems natural and obvious (just like in the US it's obvious that you should send them to prison and approaches like Portugal's are seen as radical). But I mean, hasn't the US war on drugs been a colossal failure? Drug use hasn't declined and American prisons are full of "criminals" which are actually just drug addicts who can't really help what they do. Instead of helping those in need, you treat them like a sore sight to be sweeped off the streets. You might as well make it a crime to be terminally ill or being homeless.
