Here is an interesting little tidbit for you all that will allow a "logon" as system without modifying the registry, or even having admin access to your local machine!

Make a copy of cmd.exe and name it logon.scr and overwrite the existing one in the c:\WINNT directory. Reboot and allow the system to sit there for 15 minutes without touching the keyboard or mouse.

After the 15 minute timer goes off, those helpful blokes at Microsoft thoughtfully run a nice screensaver for you if you have NOT logged in or touched the keyboard.

You now have a nice little command prompt run as "SYSTEM", and have bypassed ALL authentication on the machine. Type in "explorer" if you really MUST use a GUI. If you have insufficient privileges to overwrite that file, but REALLY have to log into THAT instance of NT/2000/XP, install a second copy of the OS, and use your new admin rights to copy over the old file. Then reboot to the original copy of the OS, stir briskly and you are in.

This is an excellent method for recovering a machine with a lost admin password, but where it is critical to recover the existing OS.

Monk.
