Here is a post from the Force Net by Kuro-Sa. It really gets to the bottom of how Midichlorians tie in beautifully with the classic trilogy. I thought you guys would enjoy it.
HUGE misconception and misunderstanding:
Some people have argued (especially most of the movie journalists) that the Midichlorian thing ruined the "Force" concept. They said that it took away the mystisism and the whole magic. This is not the case! These people and I'm sure most people in general didn't understand what the Midichlorians were all about. The magic and the mystic setting of the Force has not been diminished one bit. The whole issue has actually been brought to a more detailed level that makes us understand how the whole thing works. Lets continue...
The critics and most people thought that the midichlorians turned out to be the force. As if the midichlorians are the force. And these people have completely misunderstood the whole thing. If you look deeper and understand what the midichlorians are you will find out it was an ingenious and very necsesary addition to Starwars. And it basically explains everything that was missing from the whole force issue.
How come just anyone in the SW universe cannot recieve the necessary training, put on a robe, pickup a lightsaber and become a jedi? How come only a rare minority are able to become a jedi? How come no matter how hard most people were to train, they could never attain those abilities? What makes that selected few so special?
HERE IT IS:
The Force is a powerful and mystical energy field that surrounds, combines and penetrates us. It surrounds all living and none living things. It exists in the essence of all existance. It is an ever powerful, supernatural, predominant phenomenon that is everywhere in the universe. That, is what The Force is and nothing in TPM tampers with the above defenition of it. (The concept of midichlorians does not tamper with or degrade the force at all, hence the misconception I talked about - Lets see what the midiclorians are...)
The Midichlorians are not "the Force", and do not CONTRIBUTE anything TO the force. The force exists with or without the Midichlorians. Or in other words: The Midichlorians have nothing to do with the Force's existance. The force is the almighty, mystic, supernatural power as we have known since the OT (and as I have described above) whilst the Midichlorians are a life form - But a very special lifeform ==> The Midichlorians enable us to be aware of the Force's existance.
- Qui Gon in TPM:" Without the Midichlorians, we would have no knowlidge of the Force. They continualy speak to us telling us the will of the Force".
(Look at all the implications in these last few lines: being aware of the forces existance; implies that the Force exists whether we had known about it or not, and had the Midichlorians had existed or not. "Telling us the will of the Force"; really tells us about the greatness of the force and how humble we and the midichlorians are.) Now lets move on to the main issue...
WHAT ARE THE MIDICHLORIANS ALL ABOUT AND WHY WAS IT SO NECCESSARY TO INTRODUCE THEM?:
Why is that only a very few are able to become Jedi? What is the special element about these people? Remember Midichlorians reside within all living cells, in all living things. Everyone has the Midichlorians. And they are not mere microbes they themeselves are a very special and mystical lifeform; Remember: "Without the Midichlorians life could not exist" and "They continually speak to us telling us the will of the Force". Here is the answer and I think you're gonna like it:
An excessive amount of Midichlorians enables that person to go beyond the one way relationship with the Force ==> Instead of just being under the influence of the force (like all living things), it enables him to interact with it. To tap into the force; to "Use the Force". To Enter it's vast area of influence and manipulate objects and other living things; To attain lightning-quick reflexes and an explicit sense of awarness of the future, the past and of all his surroundings through the forces control over destiny... To become one with the force and ascend to a higher level of existence.
This is what sets the special few apart from the rest; Their excessive Midichlorians are a medium between them and the Force, a two way connection, a bridge. And because of it they have a relationship with the Force that ordinary people can never have, and have supernatural abilities that ordinary people will never have.
I rememer when I was watching ESB when it first came out. I remember the scene on Hoth where Luke is hanged by that ice monster in the cave (I love that scene by the way). He sees his lightsaber a few feet away but it is out of his reach. But he somehow reaches out and is able to pull it towards him. "hmmm" I thought "how can he do that?".
He was an ordinary farmer in the last movie and he has magical powers now. How? Why? Why is Luke so special? How come, for example, Han Solo doesn't have these powers? I was loving what I was seeing but throughout ESB it was inconceviable to me why Luke went to Degobah to be trained, why the Emperor is after him etc. Why "Luke"?! The former farm boy is now using telekinesis to remotely move objects and going on a one on one duel with the mighty DV! Its beautiful, but theres something missing.
You can say that "He's special because he's Vader's son". Then why is Vader special? The Midichlorian issue clarifys the whole thing. When I watch ESB now (after the introduction of the Midichlorians) and see Luke "learning the ways of the Force" and using all kinds of force powers, its much more enjoyable, because basically he is unleashing his potential - The potential that he was born with; The potential he has in his very nature, his core; The potential he has because of the crazy amount of Midichlorians in him. ==> Which enables him to have that amazing connection with the force and enter its vast area of influence.
For me thats what the whole "The force is strong with him." phrase is about. ==> He can enter the Force's vast area of influences, and be one with the force (because it is in his nature - because of his abnormally high Midichlorian count).
To me this is way better than "The force is strong with him becasue...err... it just is... its an act of God".
Or
- "Vader is strong with the Force"
- "why? How?"
- "err...You ask to many questions, it just is so - Sit down an enjoy the freakin movie."
So one small question to all of you who bash the Midichlorian issue:
Lightsabers are made of an energy cell, special crystals, and delicate wiring (They are mainly technological devices). Does this fact take anything away from their beauty? Or there status of being the legendary weopons of the "mystical Jedi Knights"? Or would you prefer the lightsaber being: A special piece of metal found only on the moons of Viego that when in the hands of the mighty Jedi Knights a magical blade emerges from the tip?
The Midichlorians took nothing away from the Force, or Starwars. They in fact contributed a vital element that made us enter the Starwars universe at a deeper level.
