Man Takes Up Internal Farming 136

RockDoctor writes "'A Massachusetts man who was rushed to hospital with a collapsed lung came home with an unusual diagnosis: a pea plant was growing in his lung.' Just that summary should tell you enough to work out most of the rest of the details, but it does raise a number of questions unaddressed by the article: How did the pea roots deal with the patient's immune system? What would have happened if the situation had continued un-treated? I bet the guy has a career awaiting him in PR for a pea-growing company."

NASA Preparing For Largest Hurricane Study Ever 28

anonymous writes "Does lightning predict the intensity of a tropical storm? What role does dust from the Sahara play? Do hurricanes form from the large-scale environment around a tropical storm or from small-scale formations 100 kilometers from the center? A team from NASA, NOAA, and NSF plan to find out. Starting Saturday, the team will conduct the largest hurricane study every undertaken. Among other things, a better understanding of hurricanes has ramifications for weather prediction, building codes, insurance policies, and disaster planning." One recent study found that hurricane creation is affected by plankton in the ocean.

Rupert Murdoch Claims To Own the 'Sky' In 'Skype' 186

Crudely_Indecent writes "Not content to own just news stories, Rupert Murdoch is now going after individual words! His BSkyB is fighting a legal battle with Skype, claiming that it owns the 'Sky' in 'Skype.' From the article: 'A spokesman for Sky confirmed that the company has been involved in a "five-year dispute with Skype" over trademark applications filed by the telecomms company. These are, the spokesman added: "including, but not limited to, television-related goods and services."'"

n it's heyday, I feel like Star Wars Galaxies was the last hugely successful game of this type. Player owned housing, maps that measured 10 square kilometers, very little instancing, and PVP that could happen anywhere at any time. This was the greatest MMO imho. It had a place for the casual player and a place for the hard core. It had places for people who didn't even want to fight, and just played socially. This game had it all until Sony (Whom I havent bought a game from since) completely at utterly destroyed their game, and consequently, their subscriber base. Ever since SWG, my heart just isn't in it anymore. MMO's lost their magic the day they turned my lightsaber into a nerf bat.

I think all of us still have some toys depending on how strict your definition of "toy is. I've got Video game machines mostly; a Wii, an XBox 360, a PS3, a ridiculously beefy gaming PC... oh yeah and my Porsche is most assuredly a big toy.

Submission + - Small Corporation transitioning to Open Office 3

Pay The Piper writes: "As an IT Support Technician in a small corporation, I've been tasked by one of my managers to determine the feasibility of transitioning our small 40 or 50 person office from Microsoft Office 2000 to Open Office 3.0. What are some of the problems I may run into as far as document cross compatibility? Has the Open Office suite evolved to a point that permits easy transition from Microsoft's suite? Besides the obvious "free vs. expensive" argument, what are some of the pros and cons of transitioning? Are there any reliable ways to view/edit/save a document saved in the OpenXML format through Open Office, or are my co-workers and I still going to be stuck in Microsoftland?"

Dave, don't you have PMI's to be doing or something? Seriously, this is a "Is PC gaming dead" discussion. Not a "Linux is superior" discussion. Besides, just because the industry is moving in a direction you don't like, doesn't mean you have to miss out on all the kick ass games that are coming out these days. You can dual boot. Your words smack of someone who switched over to linux for geek points or an e-peen enhancement. Don't get me wrong; I know linux is superior. I just know that right now microsoft calls the shots. And don't give me that "If we all join the cause we can change the industry" speech. Thats the kind of stuff that libertarians say. Microsoft is calling the shots until they get an awful ceo, make some terrible decisions, and completely destroy their multi kagillian dollar company. Developers go with microsoft because thats where the money is. The money will be there because developers go to microsoft. Microsoft wins. And I know I'll take flak from every active slashdot reader for saying it, but microsoft is just fine for gaming. If you don't think its a product thats worth paying for... don't pay for it. Yeah you know what I mean. And yes I have a $4000 multi GPU gaming rig. Get back to work. Sincerely, You know who
