Comment Not ready for prime time (Score 1) 109

This is one of those Google features that I scratch my head over. It sounds great but is almost completely useless. I tried several images both from the web and from pictures of famous locations that I had taken on vacation. I tried product photos, and place photos. I tried the search page and the Chrome extension. I got one page crash (drag-n-drop an image to search by), and no results that could be considered anything but awful. The results were so far off the mark as to be silly. I posted a chair and got action figure toys. The one example of useful results and the reason I will keep it around is that is showed other sites that are using images that I have copyrights too but were captured from my site. I guess if I had the time I could go ask for some credit and get a little pagerank love.

OnLive To Be Built Into Vizio Devices 73

Gamasutra reports that cloud gaming service OnLive has reached an agreement with Vizio to integrate OnLive directly into the hardware manufacturer's TVs and Blu-ray players. "Vizio also announced that it will introduce ... tablets and smartphones based on Google's Android operating system that integrate the gaming service through its Via Plus ecosystem. OnLive is already publicly available for Apple's iPad, but that app is exclusively for spectating other people who are playing Onlive through PCs or the MicroConsole. Perlman said Onlive is coming to Vizio's mobile devices with playable games. ... Perlman also said that thanks to the open nature of the Android platform, manufacturers are creating more traditional game controllers for Android tablets. Some resemble a gamepad cut in half, where one half snaps on either side of the table screen, Perlman said. Certain Android tablets will also potentially work with Onlive's official controller, if the mobile device supports the appropriate RF interface."

Dynamoo writes "The NYT reports that a two-part edition of PKD's Exegesis will be published next year. This huge work, a combination of journal and philosophical treatise, has been published in part before, but this is the first time that the whole version will be made generally available."

The State of Ruby VMs — Ruby Renaissance 89

igrigorik writes "In the short span of just a couple of years, the Ruby VM space has evolved to more than just a handful of choices: MRI, JRuby, IronRuby, MacRuby, Rubinius, MagLev, REE and BlueRuby. Four of these VMs will hit 1.0 status in the upcoming year and will open up entirely new possibilities for the language — Mac apps via MacRuby, Ruby in the browser via Silverlight, object persistence via Smalltalk VM, and so forth. This article takes a detailed look at the past year, the progress of each project, and where the community is heading. It's an exciting time to be a Rubyist."

Feed Techdirt: Cursed By Its Name: Office For Mac 2008 To Be Released In 2008 (techdirt.com)

Microsoft has recently said that it has no plans to discontinue its tradition of large-scale, heavyweight software offerings, like Office and Windows. Seeing as these two franchises continue to be huge money makers for the company, its stance is understandable. But if it has no plans to change its business model, then it needs to fix the problems associated with its current one, such as long development times and quality control. So far, anyway, these problems don't seem to be going away. The company has announced that its forthcoming Office for Mac 2008 will be released late. The company had hoped to have it ready by the coming Christmas season, but it will now be released in 2008, which is appropriate, given the name. Despite their high profile, Macs still make up a small share of the overall computer market, so it's likely that Microsoft isn't devoting a tremendous amount of resources to this area. Still, the delay is indicative of the ongoing problems facing the company.
