Comment Happy about the Preamble (Score 1) 111

With all of the chatter about the merits and viability of the tax credit, I'm surprised at the lack of comment on the preamble. Regardless whether the proposed legislation makes it, as a resident of NYS, I'm really encouraged to hear that the Assembly "Gets It" when it comes to *using* OSS. That's not "proposed" -- they've already made OSS a significant part of how they get things done. This is a *huge* win in mindset, and will have positive effects (even indirect ones) beyond any small tax credit.

I haven't looked carefully at the rest of the platforms that Yahoo provides, but I believe that at least Yahoo Messenger (when connecting with Pidgin anyway) also sends the same auth credentials in plain text. Not that the overall problem is insignificant (*any* time auth credentials are sent, in any context, they should be encrypted), but worrying only about IMAP is naive in this case. (What about POP? What about all the Y! web platforms?)

Successful Alternatives To Password Authentication? 188

DonaldP asks: "Have any of you successfully deployed a key, token, or biometric-based access control for Windows machines to replace (or enhance) the typical login/logout authentication process (even image-recognition schemes would be considered)? I see different stuff out there but short of actually evaluating each one, it's hard to get a good idea of what the scene is like, what is crap and what actually delivers. Does anyone have experience with such systems, or can suggest other suitable solutions?"

Which Asterisk Or Other VoIP System To Deploy? 91

ubercombatwombat is looking for a bit of advice: "On the 9th of November, I have a meeting to discuss an Asterisk based phone system for a new elementary school. I am the network admin for the district. Currently, we are migrating from a T-1 based Nortel (option 61, 2 x option 11 and 7 x Norstar 8x32's, for those who care) to 1GB data fiber and a 2nd pair per site — to allow simple copper-to-fiber for the split T-1/Norstar's. We also just got a 10MB (scalable to 100MB) connect to the Internet. I can keep the VoIP basically on a separate network if need be as well. What do I install? Are there Asterisk vendors that are available and have enough experience?"
