Personally, I prefer a (more or less) fixed schedule because I like being able to plan, and have, a life that isn't solely about career. It's important to me to be able to have the option of taking regular evening classes, for instance, and have the predictability of knowing I can devote, say, every Tuesday night to that, to plan to have dinner with friends and family, to know several weeks in advance that I can get away on any one of several weekends, to name a few advantages of predictable schedules. Also,. I have been on the other side of the fence and can tell you that swing shifts are no fun, nor are situations where you work the weekend expecting to get contiguous time off the following week, but -- doh! we've had something urgent come up and we can't really give you the time off in a block after all....
