Journal Otter's Journal: Election Day 1

Good news: Massive turnout. Whatever the consequences of such a bitterly divisive political environment, it's good to see people getting involved. Even if I did have to stand in line for an hour listening to the idiot behind me shriek into her cell phone. ("MOM, PLEASE DON'T VOTE FOR GEORGE BUSH! PLEASE! DAD, TELL HER NOT TO VOTE FOR BUSH!")

Bad news: I never thought I'd see the day where I was less concerned about which candidate would win the presidency than about whether the legitimacy of the election would be accepted. A Bush win or a Kerry win would both be fine with me -- please let it not be another squeaker for Bush.

  • Serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq has certainly made me appreciate the "free" democracy we have. Although the TV news trys to play up the "battle" between the candidates, at least we don't expect violence and such when exercising our right to vote. Despite our attempts at providing security here along with the Iraqi Security Forces in Iraq, I'll bet on election day there will be cases of voter intimidation and even some violence.
