Journal Otter's Journal: RIP: Rob "lilo" Levin 3

For those who don't read the front page -- Rob "lilo" Levin of OPN/FreeNode died yesterday, from injuries from being hit by a car while cycling. He received little recognition (and what little he got was mostly negative), but he was one of the key figures in dveloping the open-source world as we now have it, along with CmdrTaco and Hemos, Scoop from Freshmeat, and a few others.

Plus as a bicycle commuter myself (about to put on my helmet and check in at work for an hour), the reality of that risk we face every day is sobering.

  • Man, the fact that the thread is about someone who is dead doesn't stop stuff like this rantingkitten [slashdot.org] bastard.

Kind of like the "well you shouldn't have been there anyway" kind of attitude that just turns my stomach.

On the one hand, that rantingkitten guy is an idiot. On the other hand, the cyclists who ride in illegal or obnoxious ways -- running lights, riding at night without lights, wobbling slowly down the middle of a car lane -- which around here is most of them, endanger my safety by generating hostility in drivers. I really wish the police would crack down on them.
  • Was he not wearing a helmet? :^(
